Taking Breaks and Changing Subjects When Tired During Torah Study

The Rebbe writes that one must care for their health as mandated by Torah, and should not push themselves to exhaustion during study. When feeling tired, one should either switch to a different type of study or take a break, as this itself is a mitzvah and prepares one for further learning.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

... In connection with what you wrote in your letter, it is certainly unnecessary to remind you again about the mitzvah in our holy Torah to guard one's bodily health, as explained also in the maamar of Yud Shevat of this year and in many other places. Such a simple matter does not require further proofs. Therefore, your manner of study or thinking about words of Torah must certainly be arranged in such a way that it does not harm your health. Do not fool yourself into thinking that concerns for health come from the yetzer hara; although sometimes this is the case, generally the commandment 'Bechol derachecha da'eihu' ("In all your ways know Him") is a great principle—that the body should be healthy and whole. Therefore, when you feel tired during your studies or when reviewing your learning in thought, you should either switch to another type of study or pause for rest for some time. Besides being a mitzvah as mentioned above, even regarding Torah study itself this is preparation so that further learning will be possible; and in many matters, preparing for a mitzvah is considered like the mitzvah itself.

Certainly you were called up to the Torah near your birthday and also gave tzedakah on your birthday before morning prayers and Minchah. All of the above will bring you additional blessing and success in your personal matters and in your activities on behalf of Chabad.

With blessings for good news and regards to Anash.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that maintaining one's health is a Torah obligation. When feeling tired during study, it is proper to take a break or change subjects—this itself fulfills a mitzvah and enables continued growth in Torah learning.
