On Studying Chassidus and Facing Spiritual Challenges in Our Generation

The Rebbe addresses concerns about a son's desire to study in yeshiva and the importance of learning Chassidus. He explains that, especially today, exposure to challenges requires deep knowledge of faith, and encourages supporting the son's pursuit of inner Torah study.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter and apologize for my delayed response due to many obligations. The content of your letter concerns your son, the Avrech... shiyichyeh, who wishes to travel to study in yeshiva, relying on our Sages' ruling: "Exile yourself to a place of Torah." I agreed with this, but it does not seem right in your eyes due to his health situation—especially since his education is assured even at home.

For you and your peers, it is surely unnecessary to bring all the explanations and reasons given for the Mishnah's ruling "Exile yourself to a place of Torah." The main point is whether one accepts the reason or not; since the Mishnah does not specify a clear reason, we have only its words. It is self-evident that this does not diminish parental honor or trust—especially according to the explanation that Rabbi Nehorai (the author of this saying) is Rabbi Elazar ben Arach, who himself experienced this (see Shabbat 147b).

Regarding what you wrote about safeguarding his health: certainly one should strive for this in whichever place he travels. In both the United States and Eretz Yisrael, friends and loved ones can be found who will watch over your son as much as possible. Especially since physical health greatly depends on satisfaction of the soul; specifically, if your son finds himself among friends suited to his spirit, this will also increase his physical well-being—unlike being alone and often dissatisfied.

On this occasion I wish to point out another matter: regarding studying Chassidus. From between the lines of your letter it seems you are not entirely comfortable with this. Based on what I have heard many times from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal—who saw firsthand—I write as follows:

It is known that years ago there were various approaches regarding youth education: whether it should be only Gemara with Rishonim/Acharonim/Poskim or also Mussar and Chassidus. About sixty or seventy years ago, even Lithuanian yeshiva leaders strongly opposed even Mussar study—claiming Gemara and Poskim suffice and Torah protects; even if one strays from the path, its light brings him back. But after some decades passed, life itself proved that some study directly addressing character traits—the soul's feelings and duties—is necessary; even Lithuanian greats eventually agreed to significant Mussar study.

Those privileged to benefit from the Baal Shem Tov's Torah—his students and their students—who brought into life the Arizal's directive that in our generation it is a mitzvah to reveal this wisdom (the inner Torah), know that when the Baal Shem Tov asked Mashiach "When will you come?", he answered: "When your wellsprings spread outward." This makes clear beyond doubt the necessity of studying teachings from Baal Shem Tov's disciples.

Still, in previous generations there was room for an approach limiting such study because they were confident youth would never encounter philosophical questions or those who would challenge faith matters. But today—especially in recent years with decrees and persecutions disrupting everything—youth face extremely difficult trials; unfortunately it is inevitable they will meet those who cast doubt on all that is holy—even core beliefs. It is essential they know what is taught in Baal Shem Tov's tradition (which is part of Torah), as our Sages say: "Everything an accomplished student will innovate was given at Sinai"—so he need not be disturbed by what he hears from others.

Even if someone claims with certainty that his son or relative will never meet non-observant people (which contradicts our Sages' teaching: "Do not trust even yourself"), experience has shown otherwise; but even by his logic there remains doubt—and regarding pikuach nefesh (saving a life), even many doubts override Shabbat etc.

It is universally agreed that Chassidus is part of Torah. Even if someone says he wants first to learn only this part and later another—it is obvious that when a Jew says his soul desires a specific portion of Torah given at Sinai directly from G‑d Himself, he must be strengthened and encouraged to pursue it—especially since about this portion our Sages say (Shabbat 31a): "If you did not bring up chitin [wheat], better had you not brought up chomtin [chaff]."

In my view you should thank Hashem for inspiring your son with a pure spirit so he desires to learn inner Torah—which as Zohar says (III 152a): "This is the soul of Torah," just as the soul gives life to the body so does inner Torah give vitality to revealed Torah learning. I strongly hope you will derive much nachas from him.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that especially today—with spiritual challenges so prevalent—it is vital for youth to learn Chassidus alongside revealed Torah. Supporting children’s pursuit of inner Torah strengthens both their faith and their overall well-being.
