פנו אלי בבקשה בענין הילד... הרוצה להתקבל להת"ת, וכפי שהודיעוני משתוקק לזה אף שכפי הנראה עדיין אינו בן חמש שנה, אבל כיון שאין חסר אלא איזה חדשים, הרי אם הרופא מסכים לזה מצד בריאות הנ"ל, אין החדשים האלו מעכבים (יעוין ג"כ בהלכות ת"ת לרבינו הזקן רפ"א ד"ה בשנה חמישית כו'. ואף שמסיים שם בביתו, הנה בכלל ידוע שהמנהג מאז ועד עתה בזה נשתנה, כי אז הי' המנהג להוליך אצל מלמד תינוקות כשהי' בן שש או שבע שלימות משא"כ בדורות האחרונים, ויעוין ג"כ בספר שיחת קיץ ת"ש עמוד ס"ה ואילך, ואף שפשיטא שאין זה הוראה לרבים כיון שהי' הצ"צ כבן שלש). ואולי יש להם טעמים מיוחדים, ומטובם להודיעני.

You approached me with a request regarding the child... who wishes to be accepted into the Talmud Torah. As you informed me, he is eager for this, and although it appears he is not yet five years old, since only a few months are missing, if the doctor agrees from the perspective of this child's health, these few months do not prevent admission (see also Hilchos Talmud Torah by our Rebbe the Alter Rebbe, chapter 1, s.v. "in his fifth year," etc.). And even though it concludes there "in his home," in general it is known that the custom from then until now has changed in this regard. For then it was customary to bring a child to a melamed when he was six or seven full years old, which is not the case in recent generations. See also Sefer Sichas Kayitz 5700 page 65 and onward; and although obviously this is not an instruction for the public since the tzt"z was about three years old. Perhaps they have special reasons; I would appreciate if they would inform me.
