מכתבם מכ"ז בתמוז קבלתי ות"ח על אשר סדרו כל עניני שנה הראשונה ויום היא"צ כדבעי.
ויקבלו מאה דולר מהרה"ג והרה"ח כו' מהרח"ה שי' האוולין לקופת הכולל ממני על ההוצאות הכרוכות בכל הנ"ל, בצרוף תודה מקול"ע.
ויש להעיר במרז"ל (שבת קנב, ב ושם זח"א רכו, רע"ב) דלאחר י"ב חדש דהיינו ביום ומיום יא"צ הראשון, הנשמה עולה ואינה יורדת,
ויש להוסיף טעם בצדיקים, דהנה צדיקים ביום פטירתם הם במדרי' נעלית ביותר
- יעוין במקומות המצוינים במעבר יבוק מ"א פי"ז, ועייג"כ במצו"ד מ"ב ב' יו"ד -
ונודע שביום הפטירה "כל עמל האדם שעמלה נפשו בחייו למעלה בבחי' העלם והסתר מתגלה ומאיר בבחי' גילוי מלמעלה למטה בעת פטירתו"
- לשון רבינו הזקן באגה"ק סימן כח, וי"ל שזהו כוונת רז"ל (אבות פ"ו) שבשעת פטירתו של אדם אין מלוין לו כו' אלא תורה ומע"ט בשעה ממש -
וא"כ גם לתקופת השנה - דהיינו יום היא"צ - כן הוא וכידוע שכל ענינים התלוים במועדי השנה חוזרים וניעורים בכל שנה ושנה במועד זה,
ואדרבה, מצד הענין שת"ח אין [להם] מנוחה גם בעוה"ב והולכים מחיל אל חיל - ה"ז עלי' ביתר שאת מיום הפטירה (ולהעיר מאגה"ק סי' יד).
והנה מצד זה דעולה ואינה יורדת, איתא בשער המצות ס"פ ויחי דבשבת שלפני תשלום היב"ח עולה ושוב אינה יורדת ול"ד ביום היא"צ, משא"כ ע"פ טעם הנ"ל, ועדיין צ"ע.
בבקשה להתפלל בעד בריאות ושלום אמי מורתי תי' לאורך ימים ושנים טובות

I received your letter from the 27th of Tammuz and thank you for arranging all matters for the first year and the yahrtzeit day as appropriate. You will receive one hundred dollars from Harav Hachassid etc. Harav Chaim Hevelin for the Kollel fund from me to cover all the aforementioned expenses, along with thanks from Kolel Chabad.
It is worth noting what our Sages said (Shabbat 152b and Zohar I 266b) that after twelve months—that is, on and from the first yahrtzeit—the soul ascends and does not descend. There is further reason regarding tzaddikim: On their day of passing they reach an extremely lofty level—see sources cited in Maavar Yabok Maamar 1 chapter 17, and also Metzudat David Mishna Berurah Yoreh Deah. It is known that on the day of passing "kol amal ha'adam she'amla nafsho bechayav le'ma'alah bechinot he'elem ve'hester mitgaleh u'meir bechinot gilui milma'alah le'matah b'et petirato" (all a person's toil which his soul toiled in his lifetime above in a state of concealment becomes revealed and shines openly from above to below at his passing)—the words of our master the Alter Rebbe in Iggeret HaKodesh section 28. This may be what our Sages meant (Avot chapter 6) that at a person's passing nothing accompanies him except Torah and good deeds at that very moment—and so too for the annual period—that is, on the yahrtzeit—this is also true. It is well known that all matters connected to annual cycles are renewed each year at their appointed time; moreover, since Torah scholars have no rest even in Olam Haba and go from strength to strength—this ascent is even greater than on the day of passing (see also Iggeret HaKodesh section 14).
Now regarding this idea that "she ascends and does not descend," it says in Shaar HaMitzvot end of Vayechi that on the Shabbat before completing twelve months she ascends and does not descend again—not so on the yahrtzeit itself; but according to the above reasoning this still requires further clarification.
