בעתו קבלתי מכתבו מיו"ד כסלו המודיע אשר לפי דעתו מצב בתו ... שתחי' הוא רציני ומבקש להתפלל בעדה, ומסיים שמתחייב ברגע שתחלים לגמרי להיות ליהודי שומר דת.
לא עניתי לו תיכף מפני רבוי הטרדות אף שבהיותי על ציון כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ הזכרתי את בתו שת' בבקשת רפואה קרובה. ובטח נתן ברכתו. ונוסף על זה שהודיעני גיסו שי' שמצב בתו שתחי' הוטב, אקוה שיוכל להודיעני בקרוב שחזרה לבריאותה.
למרות זה שכותב הוא במכתבו שהנהו חפשי בדעות, בכל זה כותב הנני עליו את התואר איש ירא אלקים כו', שכאשר שמענו לא פעם ושתים מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ שקרא לאיש יהודי איש ירא אלקים שכן הוא בטבעו, ובלשונו הוא: א איד ניט ער קען און ניט ער וויל זיין אפגעריסן פון אלקות, אלא שלפעמים מפני סיבות חיצוניות יוכל לדמות בנפשו שאינו ירא אלקים ח"ו או כמו שכותב במכתבו שהוא חפשי בדעות.
רואים בטבע שכדי לראות את הפנימיות שבנפש האדם, הנה בכלל נעשה זה על ידי זעזוע, ואפשר להיות בשני אופנים: א) על ידי מאורע לא טוב ח"ו או ב) על ידי ענין של שמחה יוצא מדרך הרגיל, על ידי שתי אלו נזדעזעה הנפש ונופלים הלבושים החיצוניים ומתגלה טהרתה ופנימיותה.
בנידון שלו נתגלה הפנימיות על ידי ענין של חולי בתו שתחי', ויהי רצון שמכאן ולהבא לא תתעלם הפנימיות ואם יהי' רצון שתתגלה ג"כ הפנימיות שבפנימיות, הרי יהי' זה על ידי ענינים ומאורעות של שמחה.
אקוה להתבשר ממנו בקרוב בשורה טובה מבריאות בתו שתחי' ומעניניו בכלל.

I received your letter from the 10th of Kislev in which you inform me that, in your opinion, your daughter's situation is serious and you ask for prayers on her behalf. You conclude by committing that as soon as she fully recovers, you will become a Jew who observes Torah and mitzvos. I did not answer immediately due to many preoccupations, but while at the Ohel of my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe hk"m, I mentioned your daughter for a speedy recovery. Surely he gave his blessing. Additionally, your brother-in-law informed me that her condition has improved; I hope you will soon be able to inform me that she has returned to full health.
Although you write in your letter that you are free-thinking in your views, nevertheless I refer to you with the title "G‑d-fearing man," as we have heard more than once from my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe hk"m, who called every Jewish man a G‑d-fearing person because this is his true nature. In his words: "A Jew cannot and does not want to be torn away from G‑dliness; it is only sometimes due to external circumstances that one might imagine he is not G‑d-fearing, G‑d forbid," or as you write in your letter about being free-thinking.
We see in nature that to perceive the inner essence of a person's soul generally requires a jolt or shock. This can happen in two ways: (a) through an unfortunate event, G‑d forbid; or (b) through an extraordinary joyful occasion. In both cases, the soul is shaken and the external layers fall away, revealing its purity and innermost core.
In your case, the inner essence was revealed through your daughter's illness. May it be G‑d's will that from now on this inner essence will not be concealed again; and if it is destined for even deeper levels of revelation, may it come through joyful events.
I hope to hear good news from you soon regarding your daughter's health and about your affairs in general.
