הנה בטח יתבונן בטוב ה' איך שקרבת אלקים לי טוב, ויזכהו השי"ת אשר לאט לאט יבוא ג"כ להתבוננות על טוב אלקים וטוב ה' כמו שהם מצד עצמם, וכמבואר בכמה מקומות בדא"ח החילוק אשר בזה, ועל פי פשוט מיינט דאס אז בענינים של קדושה אין צריכים לחשוב רק על דבר הנחיצות ושטוב לעצמו, כי אם על דבר עצם הדבר ובמילא יביא זה לידי פועל לטובת זולתו ג"כ שזהו תכלית בריאות אדם שמשתדל בטובת חבירו לא פחות מבטובת עצמו, ובפרט יש יכולת זו לזה שהקב"ה מראה לו ענין טוב בהשגחה פרטית שאז היצה"ר ווערט קלענער, והשי"ת יעזרהו שמצד עבודתו עוד יקטין אותו ביותר.

In response to your letter—without indication of when it was written—with the good news: surely you will contemplate the goodness of Hashem and how 'Kirvas Elokim li tov' ("Closeness to G‑d is good for me"), and may Hashem grant you that gradually you will also come to contemplate the goodness of Elokim and the goodness of Hashem as they are in their own right. As explained in several places in Chassidus, there is a distinction here; and simply put, this means that in matters of holiness one should not think only about what is necessary or what is good for oneself, but rather about the very essence of the matter. Consequently, this will lead to practical benefit for others as well—for this is the ultimate purpose of man's creation: that he strives for his fellow's good no less than for his own. Especially does one have this ability when Hashem shows him something good through Divine Providence; then the yetzer hara becomes smaller, and may Hashem help him that through his service he will diminish it even more.
