It was with pleasure that I read your letter (without an indication of when it was written) informing me that the campaign regarding the Talmud Torah has begun, as well as about the teachers who go to the students to study with them in their homes. I also received your previous letter before Rosh Hashanah, which briefly listed the years of your life. In continuation of this, I am hereby making a repeated and emphatic request: since you mention that you were among those who served my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe hk"m in Rostov in 5681 (1921), please record everything you remember from that time. I would be extremely grateful if you fulfill this request; the more detailed your notes are, the better. I hope these matters are preserved in your memory and that you will fulfill my request fully.

I will address a few matters from your letter: (a) At the end of your list of life events for long days and good years, you conclude "all my years have been bad." This follows what you mention about studying six years in Tomchei Temimim Yeshivah, meriting to serve my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe hk"m in his personal matters (which even personal matters of a general soul are themselves general), meriting to fulfill his wishes through public service work; and then for six years after that you were imprisoned, and even there my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe hk"m influenced others through you by spreading Torah and Judaism and fulfilling mitzvos practically, etc., etc. If after all this you write that all your years have been bad, I do not understand what is considered good in this world.

(b) I greatly enjoyed reading in your letter before Yom Tov about your work in Paris, Metz and its surroundings—in kosher education, strengthening Judaism and spreading Chassidus—both qualitatively and quantitatively: in the number of students and homes visited from time to time. Therefore it was with a bittersweet feeling that I read in your letter received today that one cheder has opened with eight students learning there. However, my strong hope is that this is only temporary for a very short time; soon you will gain strength so that the number of students and homes will reach what it was at the end of last summer—and obviously not be satisfied with this but increase the number even more. It will bring me joy if you inform me of good news regarding this; whoever increases or hastens is praiseworthy.
