Bayom hashemini atzeres tihyeh lachem ("On the eighth day you shall have an assembly")1. Our Rebbeim's precise questions on this verse are well known. Shemini Atzeres is a festival in its own right with regard to the six distinctions abbreviated PZR KShB (its own lots, the Shehecheyanu blessing, festival status, offering, song and blessing)2. If so, the verse should have said "on the twenty-second day of the seventh month," as with the other festivals, which are stated by their day of the month ("In the seventh month, on the first of the month," "On the tenth of this seventh month," and "On the fifteenth day of the seventh month"3). Why, then, does it say "on the eighth day"4?
Granted, Shemini Atzeres follows the seven days of Sukkos, and it is known5 that on Shemini Atzeres the matters of the seven days of Sukkos are gathered in and absorbed. Yet on Shemini Atzeres the matters of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are also gathered in and absorbed6, and still it is not called by a name that shows its connection with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (and that it follows them). Why, then, is it named "Shemini" (the eighth) (Atzeres)?
This is especially so according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov7 that the name by which a thing is called in the Holy Tongue expresses its content, and even its life-force and existence. From this it follows that the essential point of Shemini Atzeres (since it is called "Shemini Atzeres") is that it follows the seven days of Sukkos.
We must also understand the words "you shall have an assembly," on which the Midrash8 says: "This is what is written9, 'They shall be yours alone, and not for strangers with you.'" There are two matters in this.
There is the matter of "yours alone" — "Israel and the King alone"10. Yet from the very fact that the verse must exclude, "and not for strangers with you," it is understood that one might have supposed that Shemini Atzeres is also for strangers; therefore it must exclude this and say that it is only "for you."
We must also understand why Shemini Atzeres includes Simchas Torah as well — so much so that in Eretz Yisrael, "a land which… the eyes of the L‑rd your G‑d are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year"11, Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah are one day; and in the Diaspora, where they are two days, Simchas Torah is the second festival day of Shemini Atzeres. The question is well known: why was Simchas Torah set on Shemini Atzeres? Seemingly it should have been celebrated on Shavuos, "the season of the Giving of our Torah"12.
2) Now, it is explained in several places13 that Simchas Torah is celebrated on Shemini Atzeres for the second Tablets, which were given on Yom Kippur14. But this itself (that the rejoicing of Simchas Torah is specifically for the second Tablets and not for the first) needs explanation. The main revelation and perfection of the Giving of the Torah was specifically in the giving of the first Tablets — both regarding the Jewish people, who were then in a state of utter perfection, for at the Revelation at Mount Sinai "their impurity ceased"15; and regarding the world, for there was then a revelation of the very Ohr Ein Sof (the infinite light) below, as it is written16, "The L‑rd descended upon Mount Sinai," which the Targum renders "was revealed." This revelation affected the entire world17, as our Sages said18: "No bird chirped, no fowl flew, no ox lowed"; and the voice of the Ten Commandments was heard from all four directions and from above and below19 — the world itself (with all its six directions) cried out, "I am20 the L‑rd your G‑d…," "You shall have no…."
All this was specifically with the first Tablets. Why, then, was Simchas Torah set on Shemini Atzeres, for the second Tablets specifically?
The explanation given in several places21 — that Simchas Torah is celebrated specifically for the second Tablets because regarding the second Tablets it is written, "He would tell you the hidden things of wisdom, for wisdom is doubled"22 — itself needs explanation. Since the revelation (of the Giving of the Torah) among the Jewish people and in the world came specifically with the first Tablets, as above, seemingly the rejoicing of Simchas Torah, with its melodies and dancing (an outward revelation), should have been on Shavuos, when the first Tablets were given openly and publicly.
This is especially so according to what is explained23 about the dancing (of Simchas Torah): dancing is done mainly with the feet, and within them with the heel, the lowest part of a person24 (though through this the head too is lifted and dances).
From this it is understood that the rejoicing of Simchas Torah is mainly not because of the Torah's effect on the Jewish people — Yisrael, whose letters spell li rosh ("a head for Me")25 — but because of the Torah's effect on the world, which is secondary26 to the Jewish people, as the feet are secondary to the head; and within the world itself, on its lowest matters (the level of the "heel").
Accordingly, it is all the more puzzling that Simchas Torah was set for the second Tablets specifically, since the advantage of "wisdom doubled" in the second Tablets pertains to the Jewish people.
It is also puzzling that, according to this (that the rejoicing of Simchas Torah is for the second Tablets, given on Yom Kippur), Simchas Torah should have been celebrated on the day after Yom Kippur27.
That Simchas Torah was not set on Yom Kippur itself can be explained by the principle that "there is no rejoicing without eating and drinking"28; but it should have come immediately after Yom Kippur.
Perhaps one may say even more. We find that in that year (of the dedication of the Beis HaMikdash) the Jewish people did not observe Yom Kippur, and a heavenly voice went forth and said to them, "All of you are invited to the life of the World to Come"28, because the rejoicing of the dedication of the Beis HaMikdash is loftier than the affliction of Yom Kippur.
And since the rejoicing of Simchas Torah is an exceedingly great joy — greater even than the joy of Simchas Beis HaSho'evah29, of which it is said, "Whoever has not seen the rejoicing of Simchas Beis HaSho'evah has never seen joy in his life"30 — it would have been fitting to set Simchas Torah on Yom Kippur itself.
3) This will be understood by first explaining what the first Tablets and the second Tablets represent in man's avodah (Divine service).
For the main purpose of the Giving of the Torah is that the Torah be received — man's avodah.
The first Tablets represent the avodah of tzaddikim, and the second Tablets the avodah of baalei teshuvah (penitents).
The advantage of the second Tablets over the first is that the avodah of teshuvah is loftier than the avodah of tzaddikim31.
The explanation: the general difference between the first and the second Tablets is that the giving of the first Tablets came from Above — "The L‑rd descended upon Mount Sinai."
Although the revelation at the Giving of the Torah affected the world, even its inanimate matter, so that the world (even its inanimate matter) became permeated with that revelation, it did not bring about a lasting refinement and elevation in the world; only the revelation from Above shone in it32.
Likewise with the Jewish people: the effect of the revelation even on the body (that "their impurity ceased") came from the side of the soul.
At the Giving of the Torah the very essence of their souls was revealed — the level of yechidah [which has no existence of its own; its whole existence is to be a vessel receiving from the level of Yachid (the singular One)33]. And since the yechidah too is bound with the body34, the revelation of the yechidah shone in the body as well, down to its "heel," in the spirit of what is written about Avraham35: "Because (eikev) Avraham obeyed My voice…"36.
The reason is that the revelation of the Giving of the Torah came as an arousal from Above, not brought about by an arousal from below. Although there was the avodah of Sefiras HaOmer during the seven weeks between the Exodus and the Giving of the Torah, it is understood that through this avodah (of the forty-nine days and the fiftieth day) they were in no way on a level to be a vessel for the revelation of the Giving of the Torah37. Rather, that revelation came as an arousal from Above on its own initiative — "I am the One Who began"38; and the avodah needed before the Giving of the Torah was only a preparation39.
This is similar to what is explained in several places40 about the difference between an arousal from Above that corresponds to the arousal from below, and an arousal from Above that comes as a gift, which the arousal from below cannot reach at all. Although the arousal from Above that comes as a gift is also drawn down only after the arousal from below (and the corresponding arousal from Above) has come first, it is not the arousal from below that draws it down, for this arousal from Above comes from a level the arousal from below cannot reach. It is drawn down only after the arousal from below (and the corresponding arousal from Above) because "the Holy One, blessed be He, dwells only in a complete place"41.
So too with the avodah during the seven weeks before the Giving of the Torah: that avodah was not a vessel for the revelation (one cannot say that the avodah drew the revelation down); it was only a preparation, through which they became something like a vessel (but not an actual vessel) for the revelation of the Giving of the Torah.
And this itself (that they were something like a vessel for the revelation) came from their root and source — from the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, back to "Avraham was one"42. This is why there is (an initial supposition) in the writings of the Arizal43 that the Giving of the Torah began in the days of the Patriarchs.
All this was with the first Tablets.
The giving of the second Tablets, however, came through an arousal from below.
The teshuvah of the Jewish people (for the sin of the Golden Calf) was an arousal from below that aroused and drew down the revelation of the second Tablets.
This is why the second Tablets were given in the month of Tishrei: the matters of Tishrei come through the avodah of Elul, which is a vessel and an arousal from below that arouses and draws down the matters of Tishrei.
Therefore, through this, refinement and elevation come about in the lower realm itself, on its own terms (unlike with the first Tablets).
This is why, in man's avodah, the first and second Tablets are the avodah of tzaddikim and the avodah of teshuvah. The avodah of tzaddikim (including the drawing down that comes through avodah) is in the mode of "direct light," from above to below, whereas the avodah of teshuvah accomplishes something new — the lower realm itself is refined and elevated.
4) The explanation: the avodah of tzaddikim is when a person is in the state of "G‑d made man upright"44, for every Jew, whatever his state, by nature wants to fulfill his Creator's will (as in the well-known ruling45) in Torah study, in the fulfillment of mitzvos and in the avodah of prayer. Therefore the avodah of tzaddikim brings about nothing truly new, since that avodah accords with their innate nature.
Just as the avodah of tzaddikim is nothing truly new in the person, since it accords with his innate nature, so too regarding the matters Above: the intent of creation (from the outset) is "to bestow good upon His creatures…"46 (through their avodah in Torah and mitzvos), stemming from "the nature47 of the Good to do good"48.
So it is even higher, at the level of the root of the souls as they are rooted in His Essence, as in the teaching of the Maggid49 on "With whom did He consult?50 With the souls of the tzaddikim"51 — which, one may say, refers to His Essence (higher than "the nature of the Good to do good"). Since from the very beginning the delight He would take in the avodah of tzaddikim already arose before Him52, the (actual) avodah of tzaddikim is nothing truly new.
All this concerns the avodah of tzaddikim, as the Sages' precise wording indicates: "With whom did He consult? With the souls of the tzaddikim."
But the true intent (higher even than "With whom did He consult") is as it is written53, "which G‑d created to do" — "to do" meaning to perfect54: that man, through his avodah, should bring something new into creation, so that there be (not only "These are the generations of heaven and earth when they were created"55 — "generations" spelled in full56, for "the world was created in its fullness"57 — but also) "These are the generations of Peretz"58 — "generations" spelled in full56 — higher than "These are the generations of heaven and earth." Peretz is Moshiach, of whom it is said59, "The breaker (haporetz) has gone up before them"60. Then the world will be higher than it was at the beginning of creation, when "the world was created in its fullness" (rather, "new heavens and a new earth"61).
So too regarding Jewish souls62: the souls of the Future will be higher even than Adam as he was before the sin, as explained at the very conclusion of Likkutei Torah63 regarding the new souls of the Future, which are higher than all the souls that were included in Adam.
This novelty is brought about specifically through the avodah of teshuvah; this is why Moshiach (specifically) "comes to bring the tzaddikim to teshuvah"64.
Through this the true intent is fulfilled — the intent that transcends "With whom did He consult? With the souls of the tzaddikim."
5) So too with teshuvah in its plain sense. When a person sinned, did damage and strayed from the path (which is contrary both to man's nature and to the nature Above), and afterwards repairs this through teshuvah — especially when the teshuvah is such that "his willful sins become for him like merits"65 — something new comes about, higher than man's nature and higher than the nature Above (the nature of the Good to do good), and higher even than the root of the souls as they are at the level of "With whom did He consult."
The explanation: the avodah of teshuvah is a leap66 — a person changes and is transformed (not in an orderly, gradual way) and becomes a new being67.
This is why teshuvah transcends time, so that even as it is drawn into time it happens "in one moment and in one instant"68, because69 the avodah of teshuvah is not gradual.
This is also why it is said of baalei teshuvah, "It shall come to pass that before they call, I will answer"70. This (an answer before the call) is contrary to nature and to the order of hishtalshelus (the chain of descending levels): through the leap (of teshuvah), outside the orderly progression within the person, something outside the orderly progression comes about Above as well. It is in the spirit of the verse71, "From the depths I have called You, O L‑rd" — "depths," in the plural, meaning from depth to depth72: through the avodah of teshuvah from the inner depth of the point of the heart, one calls and draws down from the depth and inwardness of the Ein Sof, blessed be He73 [and teshuvah even reaches His Essence, as is known regarding "They asked the Holy One, blessed be He… He said, 'Let him do teshuvah and he will be atoned'"74].
Through this drawing down, "his willful sins become for him like merits"73.
Just as teshuvah brings about something new in the person, who becomes a new being, as above, so too it brings about something new in the world75: willful sins are transformed into merits.
And these merits (transformed from willful sins), since they come about through the leap of teshuvah, are loftier76 than the merits of tzaddikim.
6) This is why regarding the second Tablets (which in man's avodah are the avodah of teshuvah, as above) it is written "wisdom doubled." "Doubled" means not only double in number77 but a far greater abundance, beyond all comparison [as is also understood from the fact that with the second Tablets many matters were added — halachos, Midrash and Aggados78]. For besides the fact that a baal teshuvah has two kinds of merits (double in number) — the merits of Torah and mitzvos (as tzaddikim have) and the merits made by transforming willful sins — the merits made by transforming willful sins are loftier, beyond all comparison, than the merits of tzaddikim.
Moreover, even the Torah and mitzvos after teshuvah are loftier — "with greater strength"79.
This is also one of the explanations of why the future Redemption comes specifically through prior avodah of teshuvah80: the comprehension of Torah in the Future, too, will be "wisdom doubled."
And not only double in number — the comprehension of everything learned now in the revealed Torah and in the inner dimension of the Torah (with "his learning in his hand"81), together with the comprehension of Moshiach's Torah — but a far greater abundance, beyond all comparison. For with the coming of Moshiach there will be "Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth"82, when the secret of its reasons and its hidden treasures will be revealed83 ("the hidden things of wisdom").
Moreover, through this even the comprehension of the revealed Torah will be in a loftier manner.
So too through the avodah of Torah and mitzvos in the time of exile: all avodah in the time of exile (including the avodah of Torah and mitzvos) is the avodah of teshuvah, and through teshuvah there is "wisdom doubled."
7) This will be understood from the known teaching84 that the difference between the Babylonian Talmud and the Jerusalem Talmud resembles the difference between the first and the second Tablets.
The Jerusalem Talmud85 is in the mode of direct light (like the avodah of tzaddikim, the first Tablets), while the Babylonian Talmud is analysis amid many questions and concealments — "He has set me in dark places"86: this is the Babylonian Talmud87. Yet the halachah follows the Babylonian Talmud specifically88, for through the toil of resolving the questions and so on, one reaches the true intent — the essential concealment within the Torah, the level of "the hidden things of wisdom" (like the superiority of the merits of baalei teshuvah, made from willful sins, over the merits of tzaddikim).
This is why specifically regarding the second Tablets it is written, "He would tell you the hidden things of wisdom, for wisdom is doubled." "The hidden things of wisdom" reach (up to) the inwardness of Chochmah Stima'ah (concealed wisdom), and at its root it is the inwardness and Essence of the Ein Sof89; and this is revealed specifically through the analysis and so on of the Babylonian Talmud.
This revelation will come mainly in the Future, as the Zohar90 says on the verse91, "No eye has seen… what He will do for one who waits for Him": "What is 'for one who waits for Him'?… Those who press into a matter of wisdom, examine it closely and wait for it, to know the clarity of the matter…." Through much study and toil over many questions and so on, there will be (in the Future) the revelation of the level of "Eden," of which it is said, "No eye has seen"92 — the level of essential concealment.
Through this, elevation and perfection come about in the Torah too, which becomes bound with the Essence (like "David would join the Torah above with the Holy One, blessed be He"93). For the Torah in itself (as it was given at Sinai, with the first Tablets) is the level of Chochmah, since "the Torah comes forth from Chochmah"94. And although at Sinai the Torah that will be revealed in the Future was also given (for the Giving of the Torah took place only once)95, at that time it was given in concealment — "the hidden things of wisdom"; and the power to draw it down into revelation (as "the Torah is light"96) was given specifically with the second Tablets.
This is why it is through Torah study specifically in the time of exile (the Babylonian Talmud) that the revelation of the Future will come, when the intent of a dwelling97 in the lower realms will be fulfilled. A dwelling in the lower realms has two aspects — a dwelling for Him, for His Essence98, and a dwelling in the lower realms; and both are brought about99 specifically through study and toil in the Babylonian Talmud.
Through the toil of resolving the questions one reaches the level of essential concealment, as above — "for Him, for His Essence"; through this one also reaches the true intent, so as to rule halachah in practice, as above; and through actual deeds (according to the halachic ruling) a dwelling is made for Him in the lower realms.
This is "He has set me in dark places" (this is the Babylonian Talmud): through "dark places" (the toil over many questions and so on) comes "He has settled me" — a dwelling for Him in the lower realms.
8) So too with fulfilling mitzvos specifically in the time of exile. Although mitzvos in the time of exile are not in utter perfection [for besides the fact that the main perfection of the performance of mitzvos will be in the days of Moshiach, as we say, "And there (specifically) we will perform before You… according to the command of Your will" — a perfection that did not exist even in the time of the Beis HaMikdash100 — the mitzvos of the time of exile lack even the perfection that existed in the time of the Beis HaMikdash101], nevertheless, through contemplating this very fact, that in exile perfection is lacking, the mitzvos are performed "with greater strength."
This is like what is explained in Tanya102 about the superiority of baalei teshuvah over tzaddikim: because he was distant from G‑dliness, his thirst is all the more intense, with a great love from the depth of the heart.
And through this itself (that the mitzvos in exile are performed "with greater strength") the darkness of exile is refined and transformed into holiness — like what is explained in Tanya102, that through teshuvah out of great love and thirst, willful sins are transformed into merits (at first willful sins become "like" merits, with the kaf of comparison, until they become actual merits).
This is why the ultimate perfection of the Future is brought about (mainly) through fulfilling mitzvos specifically in the time of exile103, and especially through the avodah of teshuvah: the two aspects of a dwelling in the lower realms (which is the perfection of the Future) — a dwelling for Him, for His Essence, and a dwelling in the lower realms — are brought about (mainly) through fulfilling mitzvos specifically in the time of exile, and especially through the avodah of teshuvah.
Through the thirst and the "greater strength" of the time of exile, and especially through the cry of teshuvah from the depth of the heart, one draws down from the depth and inwardness Above — "for Him, for His Essence"; and through refining and transforming the darkness of exile, especially transforming willful sins into merits (through teshuvah), even the very lowest matters are refined and purified and become a dwelling for Him.
9) This is why the ultimate perfection of the world will come specifically in the Future — "These are the generations of Peretz." This perfection is higher than the perfection at the beginning of creation, when "the world was created in its fullness," and higher even than the world's perfection at the Giving of the Torah. For although at the Giving of the Torah, too, the world cried out "I am…," "You shall have no…" (which comprise the whole Torah104), at the Giving of the Torah this came mainly from the revelation from Above (the commandments "I am" and "You shall have no" went forth and were heard from all six directions of the world), as above; whereas in the Future it will be in the world on its own105, as our Sages said106: "In the Future, if a person goes to pick a fig on Shabbos, it will cry out and say, 'It is Shabbos today!'… the stone will cry out and say…" (and this will come from the fig and the stone themselves).
Moreover, through our deeds and avodah in the time of exile — in Torah study and the fulfillment of mitzvos, through which the darkness of exile too is refined, and especially through teshuvah by which "willful sins become like merits" — the world will be refined in the Future even in its very lowest matters, until the darkness itself will be transformed into light.
This is "These are the generations of Peretz" — this is Moshiach, of whom it is said, "The breaker has gone up before them": he will break through all bounds, meaning that even the bounds (set by holiness107) will be broken through.
10) Now, since man's avodah must have order, the avodah of teshuvah too, though it transcends order and gradation, has a special time: the forty days between Rosh Chodesh Elul and Yom Kippur, which are the four yuds at the ends of the words "Ani ledodi vedodi li" ("I am my Beloved's and my Beloved is mine")108.
The avodah of teshuvah is from below upward — first "I am my Beloved's," and afterwards "my Beloved is mine."
The last ten of these forty days (the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) are a drawing down and revelation from above to below, as our Sages said109 on the verse110, "Seek the L‑rd when He can be found, call upon Him when He is near": "These are the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur" ("when He can be found" and "when He is near" being a revelation from above to below); and, as is known111, in these days the Source of light draws near to the spark. Nevertheless, these days too belong to the avodah of teshuvah from below, because the drawing down and revelation from Above in these days come through the avodah and the arousal from below of the month of Elul: through the avodah of the first three yuds ("Ani ledodi vedodi") comes the yud of the word "li" — the Source of light drawing near to the spark.
In these ten days there are many ascents, up to the ultimate ascent of Yom Kippur; on Yom Kippur itself the ultimate ascent is in the Ne'ilah prayer (at the very close of the day); and one may say that within Ne'ilah itself it is in the recitation of Shema Yisrael (at its very close), as the Shelah states that one must then intend to give up one's life for the sanctification of G‑d's Name, and the intention is counted as if one had actually done so [and perhaps one may say this is in the spirit of the Baal Shem Tov's saying112, "Where a person's thought is, there he is"].
All these are ascents from below upward.
After this begins the drawing down from above to below (through which the intent of "He formed it to be inhabited"113 is fulfilled). The drawing down begins in the four days between Yom Kippur and Sukkos, when "all Israel are occupied with mitzvos — one with his sukkah, another with his lulav"114; and then in the days of Sukkos themselves, through actually fulfilling the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah and taking the four kinds. Through the mitzvah of sukkah the drawing down is in an encompassing manner (makif), and through taking the four kinds it is drawn inward — "You shall take for yourselves"115.
All this must then be absorbed, and this (absorption) takes place on Shemini Atzeres, "Atzeres" connoting absorption.
[This is also the meaning of the verse116, "Blow the shofar on the New Moon, at the time when it is concealed (bakeseh), for our festive day." The known explanation is that what is on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in the manner of "bakeseh" (covered and concealed) is revealed "for our festive day," on the festival of Sukkos117. Yet it says "for our festive day" in the singular (and not "for our festive days" in the plural), because the main revelation (of the matters of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) in the manner of absorption is on Shemini Atzeres — "our festive day," in the singular118.]
As is known, on Shemini Atzeres there is the union119, to the point of "they shall become one flesh"120, from which comes the "birth" of Torah and mitzvos ("the offspring of tzaddikim are good deeds"121) throughout the year, to make a dwelling for Him in the lower realms.
This is also why "Atzeres" connotes kingship (as in "this one122 shall rule over My people")123: on Shemini Atzeres a Jew becomes a king and master over the entire seder hishtalshelus (the chain of worlds), to make of it a dwelling for Him.
11) This is "On the eighth day you shall have an assembly." It is called "Shemini Atzeres," a name showing that it follows specifically the seven days of Sukkos — even though on Shemini Atzeres the matters of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are also gathered in and absorbed — because Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a matter of ascent from below upward, and since the intent is "He formed it to be inhabited," a drawing down from above to below, it is called "Shemini Atzeres": on it all the matters drawn down from above to below during the seven days of Sukkos are gathered in and absorbed. That is why it is called specifically "Shemini" [besides the fact that "Shemini" connotes richness and abundance124].
Nevertheless, Shemini Atzeres is a festival in its own right, because through the very fact that on Shemini Atzeres the matters of the seven days of Sukkos are gathered in and absorbed, something new comes about in it — a festival in its own right.
During the seven days of Sukkos there are drawn down (in an encompassing manner) the matters of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the Ten Days of Teshuvah as a whole, up to the perfect teshuvah of Yom Kippur; and through drawing this inward and absorbing it on Shemini Atzeres — "our festive day," in the singular — there is revealed (in the manner of absorption) the bond and union of the yechidah of the soul with the Yachid, which is where teshuvah reaches: "one bull, one ram"125.
This is also "you shall have an assembly," on which the Midrash says, "This is what is written, 'They shall be yours alone, and not for strangers with you.'" The verse must exclude, "and not for strangers with you," because a baal teshuvah, whose past was evil, needs extra caution126; therefore "strangers" (undesirable matters) must be excluded.
But through this very thing (the extra caution of the baal teshuvah) comes "They shall be yours alone": since teshuvah reaches His Essence, there is no room there at all for strangers — "Israel and the King alone."
On the contrary, through drawing down the Essence (through the avodah of teshuvah), the inner and true intent behind the making of undesirable matters is revealed: this was intended from the outset (as is known127 regarding "awesome in His plot against mankind"128), so that darkness be transformed into light — the transformation of willful sins into merits.
12) This is also why Simchas Torah was set on Shemini Atzeres, for the second Tablets specifically [since the revelation of the second Tablets (the teshuvah of Yom Kippur) is internalized and absorbed on Shemini Atzeres, as above]. The rejoicing of Simchas Torah is (mainly) because the Torah affects even the lowest matters in the world, which is why the rejoicing of Simchas Torah is with dancing with the feet, and within them with the heel. Therefore the rejoicing is for the second Tablets specifically — teshuvah — for through it even the lowest thing in the world is refined, until even willful sins are transformed into merits.
Just as in physical dancing, when the feet and heels lift themselves up and dance, they lift the head too (with its intellect), and it too dances with great joy beyond measure and limit — so too spiritually: through the rejoicing and dancing of Simchas Torah, elevation and uplifting come about in the "head" of the soul as well.
And since man (adam) is "like (adameh) the One Above"129, through this an elevation and uplifting comes about, as it were, even in His wisdom, which is the Torah [as is also understood from the fact that in the dancing of the hakafos the Torah too rejoices and dances, as in the well-known saying of the Previous Rebbe]. And "joy breaks through barriers"130: the rejoicing of Simchas Torah breaks through even the boundary of the Torah, as it were. For the Torah in itself is in measure and limit, and through the rejoicing and dancing of Simchas Torah, His Essence is drawn into it — as above, in the spirit of the Sages' saying, "David would join the Torah above with the Holy One, blessed be He."
As with the Torah, so with Jewish souls: through the rejoicing and dancing of Simchas Torah, elevation and uplifting come about in the "head" of the soul (as above), which becomes bound with and truly one with the Essence — "Lift up the head… by their heads"131. The main fulfillment of this will be in the tenth census: "The flocks shall yet pass under the hands of the one who counts them"132.
All this is brought about (as above) through our deeds and avodah in the time of exile, especially after the revelation of the teachings of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, and in the manner of "they will be sustained"133 through the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov and the teachings of Chabad Chassidus — "and through it they will go out of exile with mercy"134, "and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads"135 — in the true and complete Redemption, very soon indeed, with the coming of our righteous Moshiach, David the King Moshiach.
