Vitebsk

וויטעבסק

וויטעבסק (Vitebsk) is a city in present-day Belarus with a rich Jewish history, especially known for its connections to Chassidic and Jewish cultural life. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Vitebsk became a prominent center for Chassidism, largely due to the influence of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder of Chabad Chassidism, who lived there for a time.

In addition to its Chassidic connections, Vitebsk was also home to many other Jewish scholars and institutions, playing a significant role in Jewish life in Eastern Europe before the devastation of the Holocaust. It was also the birthplace of the famous Jewish artist Marc Chagall.
