... נהניתי להוודע אשר האברך הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ בעל מדות וכו' מוה"ר מרדכי אליעזר שי' שארפשטיין, התפלל בבית הכנסת של כת"ר בחג הפסח העבר, ואיתרמי לידו שאלת המחיצה בביהכ"נ, וכפי סיפורו נעשה התעוררות בין המתפללים בענין זה (וכמה גדלו דברי חכמינו אשר אף שאני ישנה בגלותא ולבי ער לתורה ומצוות), ובודאי למותר לעורר את כת"ר ע"ד גודל הענין, אלא שנשען על פסק רז"ל (ספרא ריש פרשת צו) אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין.
ארשה לי להוסיף גם איזה מלין עד"ז ולא נצרכה אלא להעדפה, והוא:
מבלי להכנס בגוף הדין, הנה כפי המצב בחדשים האחרונים הוא ע"ד מרז"ל במים ראשונים ומים אחרונים שהאכילו כו', כי עמא דבר שהם רוב המבקרים בבית הכנסת והעיקר בני ביתם, הקמת מחיצה בבית הכנסת בעיניהם הוא קידוש השם בפועל, ומזה מובן (ע"פ מרז"ל כל מי שלא נבנה בית המקדש וכו') הרושם מההיפך בזה.
ולכן לדעתי כל שמן השמים ברכוהו בכשרון השפעה בסביבתו, ובפרט למכהנים בקדש, ובפרט לרב שגם בין הרבנים תופס הוא מקום חשוב, לנצל את כל השפעתו, השכם והערב, עד שיקים את דברי התורה הזאת ע"י הקמת מחיצה כדבעי לצאת ידי כל הדיעות, ות"ל אשר דוקא בתקופת האחרונה, שהחשך כפול ומכופל ביותר, הנה מדינה זו הנוער ואפילו האנשים בגיל העמידה מתעוררים בקל הרבה יותר לענינים דיראת שמים, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בהתעוררות מראשי העדה, עיני העדה.
ויזַכה השי"ת את כת"ר ויצליחו שיעלה בידו להביא את הנ"ל בפועל בלי קישויים ובקרוב ממש.

... I was pleased to learn that the Avrech, vavac"h iy"a nu"n ba'al middot etc. Moreinu HaRav Mordechai Eliezer Sharpstein, prayed in your synagogue this past Pesach, and happened upon the issue of the Mechitzah in the synagogue. According to his account, there was an awakening among the congregants regarding this matter (and how great are the words of our Sages: "Even though I am asleep in exile, my heart is awake for Torah and mitzvot"). Certainly it is unnecessary to remind your honor about the greatness of this matter; rather, we rely on our Sages' ruling (Sifra at the beginning of Parshat Tzav): "We only urge those who are already diligent."
Allow me to add a few words on this topic—not out of necessity but for enhancement: Without entering into the core legal discussion, given the situation in recent months it resembles what our Sages said about mayim rishonim and mayim acharonim that they caused [harm], for most people who visit the synagogue—and especially their families—see establishing a Mechitzah as an actual sanctification of G‑d's name. It is thus understood (based on our Sages: "Anyone for whom the Beit HaMikdash was not rebuilt in his days...") what impression is made by the opposite. Therefore, in my opinion, anyone whom Heaven has blessed with influential ability in his environment—especially those who serve in sacred roles and particularly a rabbi who holds an important place even among rabbis—should utilize all his influence, morning and evening, until he fulfills these words of Torah by establishing a proper Mechitzah according to all opinions.
Thank G‑d that specifically in recent times—when darkness is doubled and redoubled—this country’s youth and even adults are much more easily awakened to matters of fear of Heaven; it depends only on inspiration from community leaders—the eyes of the community.
May Hashem grant your honor success so that you will be able to bring about all of the above in practice without difficulties and very soon.
