Visiting the Rebbe: Conditions for a Proper Visit

The Rebbe writes that visiting him is generally a good idea but must meet two conditions: full agreement from one's wife without coercion, and assurance that responsibilities in Morocco will not suffer. He also addresses writing a thank you letter and sending girls to study in Paris.

Haraha"ch vavach" iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moreinu HaRav Shlomo Matsov

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letters from the 20th and 27th of Iyar. The Sefer Torah was also received. Certainly you will inform me if a thank you letter needs to be written regarding this. It seems you mentioned this in one of your previous letters, but since it is now relevant in practice—please inform me again in detail: namely, the identity of the person or people for whom the letter should be written, suggesting an appropriate title—whether he is a public activist or a rabbi, etc.—and whether there is room in this letter as well for some Torah content, and if so, whether specifically or something requiring more explanation, etc.

b) Regarding those who wish to send girls to study at Beit Rivka in Paris: The situation must be clarified—both about those influencing and those being influenced: whether the candidates are disciplined, etc. It is understood that the supervision at Beit Rivka in Paris is not as complete as at the Yeshiva D'Toras Emes; on the other hand—with regard to girls—the responsibility is even greater than with boys. In any case, this is relevant only when there is benefit specifically from traveling to France because it is impossible to provide suitable education for her locally at present. Therefore, for a girl aged twelve or younger, I do not see the necessity that she must study specifically in France. Regarding those influencing—I mean—it is necessary to know the situation at Beit Rivka in France and to describe to them the nature and requirements of the students and the type of supervision they need, and ask them if they can arrange everything necessary; certainly before making a decision—you will also inform here about the discussions on this matter.

c) Regarding your heartfelt wish to meet at an appropriate time—in general this is correct. It is understood that first of all two points must be ensured: a) That it will be with your wife's full agreement—and without any coercion; b) That your affairs in Morocco will not suffer because of it—which due to this second point certainly limits the time specifically to certain periods; please inform which times these are.

With blessings for success in your holy work and personal matters—for you and your entire family.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that visiting him should only happen with one's spouse's full consent and without neglecting communal responsibilities. He also emphasizes careful consideration when sending girls abroad for education and provides guidance on expressing gratitude properly.
