במענה על מכתבו מה' במדבר, בו כותב שרוצה להיות חסיד ליובאוויטש וכן גם חבר שלו רוצה בכזה, ורוצים לדעת התנאים ומה יש לעשות.
הנה התנאים הם ללמוד תורת החסידות וע"פ מרז"ל לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה להתנהג בהדרכותי' ומנהגי'. וכמובן שכמו שבקבלת התורה שזכו לזה דוקא ע"י הקדמת נעשה לנשמע, הרי כן הוא ג"כ באיזה חלק מפרד"ס שבתורה שגם בזה צ"ל הקדמת נעשה לנשמע וכבר ידוע פסק רז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין יגעת ומצאת, ואם רוצים באמת הנה הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו.
בטח לומד תניא גם עתה וכן אומר בכל יום אחר תפלת שחרית שיעור תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - והשי"ת יצליחו.

In response to your letter from Parshas Bamidbar, in which you write that you want to become a Lubavitch Chasid—and your friend also desires this—and you wish to know the conditions and what needs to be done. The conditions are to study the teachings of Chassidus and—as our Sages say—not study alone but action is essential: to conduct oneself according to its guidance and customs. Clearly, just as at the giving of the Torah they merited it specifically by saying 'Naaseh' before 'Nishma' (we will do before we will hear), so too in any part of Pardes in Torah this precedence of action before understanding is required. It is already well known what our Sages ruled: if someone says "I have not labored but found—do not believe; I have labored and found—believe." If you truly desire this, "one who comes to purify is assisted." Surely you are already learning Tanya now and also recite every day after Shacharis a portion of Tehillim—as Tehillim is divided for the days of the month—and may Hashem grant you success.
