Memory, Imagination, and Experiencing Spiritual Freedom

The letter explores how memory and imagination can evoke emotions similar to those experienced during the original Exodus. The Rebbe teaches that true spiritual freedom is achieved by freeing oneself from both physical and spiritual limitations, especially during Pesach.

To the sons and daughters of Israel everywhere—may Hashem be upon them and grant them life.

Many greetings and blessings!

The days of the Festival of Matzos, a remembrance of our Exodus from Egypt, the time of our freedom, are approaching.

It is known that memory, imagination, and visualization act within a person’s soul; when one remembers and imagines an emotion or mood similar to what he or someone like him felt at the actual event, he experiences a comparable state of mind—more or less—to that which was felt at the time.

The stronger a person’s soul powers are and their control over the body—which is bound by time and space—the closer his emotional state during remembrance will be to what it was during the original event.

Spirit draws spirit and continues spirit; an awakening below arouses an awakening above. As our Sages said: "VeHayamim HaEleh Nizkarim VeNaasim" ("And these days are remembered and performed"), meaning that when we recall these days below, they are enacted above—and as a result, all matters connected with those days are also awakened below.

This is one reason we are commanded to remember the Exodus from Egypt in every generation and every day—including nights—to see ourselves as if we personally left Egypt today: left for freedom and were redeemed. Every day must have its own "Exodus from Egypt"—the G‑dly soul leaving the imprisonment of the body for true freedom.

What is true freedom? Freedom in every sense: freedom from servitude and suffering—both physical and spiritual. The work each person must do daily is this spiritual Exodus: leaving behind the limitations of body and animal soul, freeing oneself from the domination of his evil inclination.

When a person frees himself from his evil inclination—with Hashem’s help (Who chooses Israel as His people and took them out of Egypt, a place of impurity), through Torah study—he becomes free not only from spiritual suffering (the great struggle with his inclinations) but also from physical suffering.

As it says: "Im BeChukotai Telechu... VeNatati Gishmeichem... VeNatati Shalom BaAretz... Ani Hashem Elokeichem Asher Hotzeiti Etchem MeEretz Mitzrayim" ("If you walk in My statutes... I will provide your rains... I will grant peace in the land... I am Hashem your G‑d Who took you out of Egypt").

Blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach—and for true freedom speedily in our days through our complete redemption by Moshiach Tzidkeinu.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that by actively remembering the Exodus with imagination and emotion, we can experience true spiritual liberation each day—freeing ourselves from both inner struggles and external hardships through Torah study and connection to Hashem.
