The Baal Shem Tov used to study a shiur (set lesson) in Gemara with his students.
The learning was conducted with great sharpness and brilliance, and they studied the Rambam, the Rif (Alfasi), the Rosh and other commentaries of the Rishonim that pertained to the Gemara they were studying.
The Baal Shem Tov used to translate the words into Yiddish.
When they were studying Tractate Arachin and came to the saying of our Sages, "Lashon telisa'ei katil telisa'ei" — "the third tongue kills three"[1] — the Baal Shem Tov explained it: lashon hara kills all three — the one who makes it up, the one who tells it, and the one who listens to it. Only, this is in spiritual garments, which is more severe than murder in the physical sense.
