Holy Letters of the Rebbe – Volume 15, Letter 5435
Baruch Hashem, the 8th of Iyar, 5717, Brooklyn.
Addressed to the leadership of Agudas Chabad, Jerusalem. Shalom u’Vracha.
The Rebbe writes in response to their letter of the 29th of Nissan together with its enclosure. He begins by expressing surprise that they made no mention of preparations to utilize the upcoming day of Lag BaOmer.
Lag BaOmer was always seen as a special opportunity to inspire Jewish pride, joy, and connection to Torah. Many would travel to Meron to be at the resting place of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Yet the Rebbe emphasizes that alongside any pilgrimage there, equal attention must be given to practical activities and public programs where people actually are—especially in Jerusalem.
The Rebbe notes that his emphasis on Jerusalem is not because one mitzvah is more important than another, for our sages teach that one should not weigh the value of mitzvos. Rather, it is a matter of practical impact. While many may travel to Meron, even more people remain in Jerusalem. Therefore, where the larger public is found, there lies the greater opportunity to inspire, gather, and reach others.
The Rebbe’s message is clear: focus effort where it can accomplish the most good. Holiness must be translated into organized action, outreach, and meaningful programming that touches the lives of the many.
He adds that he is certain they will fill in these details in their next letter. The Rebbe is not assuming neglect, but asking that they report specifically what is being arranged and carried out. His request itself served as encouragement—to think bigger, do more, and transform plans into reality.
The Rebbe concludes with blessings for success in their holy work and for good news. The letter was signed in the Rebbe’s name by his secretary.
The message of the letter is timeless: never become complacent. Sacred opportunities must be seized with planning and action, and accountability itself can become a force that inspires greater accomplishment.
