Community Involvement and Balancing Torah Study

The Rebbe writes that engaging in community work is permissible if it occasionally affects Torah study, as long as one compensates during free time. He encourages focused learning, discourages distractions about travel, and stresses the importance of steady study in both revealed and chassidic teachings.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 16th of Iyar.

a) Regarding your involvement in registration activities, outreach, etc., it is understood that this should be with the agreement of the yeshivah administration. Certainly, a way can be found to arrange these matters so they do not disturb or interfere with your study of Nigleh (the revealed part of Torah) and Chassidus. Even if on rare occasions the times do not align, you will surely make up during your free hours what was missed incidentally in your study of Nigleh and Chassidus.

b) As for what you wrote about traveling to the United States to study here: there is still much to accomplish and perfect in your current yeshivah in Eretz HaKodesh (the Holy Land). Study with dedication and diligence appropriate for you, without distracting yourself with thoughts of travel at this time.

c) Regarding what you wrote about your lack of consistency in studying Nigleh: it is well known how much our holy Rebbeim emphasized diligence in learning Nigleh. As our Sages said: "If you labored and did not find [success], do not believe it." Therefore, it is within your power—if you truly desire—to study diligently and succeed. It is understood that after a break every beginning is difficult, but over time it will become easier for you, provided you make an effort according to your own nature. The same applies to studying Chassidus; certainly this too can be improved further. With the agreement of your mashpia (spiritual mentor) and teacher, divide your review times so that you do not need to spend many hours on one subject but rather alternate topics; at least at first this will stimulate enthusiasm for learning. It is already known from our Sages: "A person should always learn where his heart desires."

Certainly you keep the three daily lessons established by my revered father-in-law the Rebbe—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—as well as taking a tractate as part of dividing up Shas (the Talmud), and from time to time giving some coins to charity. May Hashem grant you success.

Blessings,

In the name of the Rebbe Shlita,

Secretary

Summary
