Teaching Aleph Beis to Young Children with Joy and Purpose

The Rebbe writes that teaching Aleph Beis to young children is a great merit and should be done with joy. Even if one feels their own Torah study is diminished, the spiritual benefit of bringing Jewish children closer to Torah is immeasurable.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter, in which you write about what you have experienced and complain about your current situation: that you are teaching young children and feel that because of this your own learning has declined, and therefore you wish either to travel to Eretz HaKodesh or be given a higher class to teach.

In general, matters such as these pertain to the administration of the Oholei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch institutions in Morocco, and so I have passed your request on to them and they will be in contact with you.

But what surprises me most is your distress over your current occupation and the conclusion of your letter where you write that you are in great pain because of this, saying that through this involvement your Torah study has declined. It is well known and publicized—the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov, which we have heard many times from my revered father-in-law the Rebbe—of how worthwhile it is for a soul to descend below into a physical body for seventy or eighty years just to do a single favor for another Jew, man or woman, physically or spiritually. The soul is truly a part of G‑d above, hewn from beneath the Throne of Glory; yet even so, the Shechinah says it is worthwhile for it to descend from its place of honor from a high roof to a deep pit just for doing one favor.

And when Hashem has granted you success so that every single day you bring Jewish children closer to our Father in Heaven—thus having a share in the joy of G‑d in His works and the joy of Israel in their Maker—you say that perhaps one's Torah study can decline because of this and therefore you are in great pain? When this matter is so clear and obvious, where do such claims come from? It seems apparent that there is doubt within you and perhaps you think these are arguments from the yetzer tov (good inclination).

Completely turn away from this path and devote yourself wholly to your sacred work—to teach Torah to Jewish children. Teaching begins with Aleph Beis etc., and none of us knows what is considered greater before G‑d. In addition to our Sages' statement: "Do not sit and weigh the mitzvos of the Torah," as it says: "Orchot Chaim pen tefaless" (the ways of life—do not weigh them).

It is understood that this work must be done with joy at having merited it; then you will also succeed in your personal matters—your mind and heart will become refined a thousand times over (in the words of the Alter Rebbe), and you will ascend in both revealed Torah study and Chassidus.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that educating young children—even starting with Aleph Beis—is an immense spiritual merit. One should embrace this role with joy, recognizing its profound impact on Jewish souls and personal growth.
