Scheduling a Wedding After Shavuos Versus on Lag B'omer, and Adding Names

The Rebbe writes that it is generally better to schedule a wedding after Shavuos or in the days following, rather than on Lag B'omer. He also advises not to add or change a person's name without significant reason, especially if the name is found in traditional sources.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your telegram from the 3rd of Nissan (and it is surprising that in all matters you send a telegram and not a letter, as then one can detail things more; furthermore, the Torah is concerned for the money of Israel, and even though you yourself are exempt, you are still not permitted [to waste money], as our Sages say (Bava Kama 91b), and this also applies regarding monetary damage which falls under "do not destroy"). In it you write about the idea of arranging the wedding on Thursday night, leading into Friday of Lag B'omer.

In general, it is better—if possible—that the wedding be held on Isru Chag of Shavuos or in the days following until halfway through the first month of Sivan. And if for some reason you specifically want Lag B'omer, then due to differing opinions on this matter as explained by later authorities, it should be done on Friday during the day but not on Thursday night leading into Friday.

Regarding what you write about the name of the woman in question—that she does not have a name in Lashon HaKodesh and is called Elga—and you ask whether to add a name: In general it is explained in many places that the letters of one's name are channels of life connecting the soul with the body. It is brought in the writings of the Arizal and generally among Kabbalists that the name given by parents is what G‑d calls out in the upper world to the soul (see Shaar HaGilgulim introduction 23; Ohr HaChaim to Devarim 29:17; Chefetz Hashem Berachos 13 and others), therefore one should not change or add a name without an important reason. And since names like Alka or Alka and similar have been brought in books listing women's names, there is no need to change it.

Certainly you will increase your strength in your work in proper education and inform me about this as well as about your fixed study sessions in Nigleh and Chassidus.

Awaiting good news and with blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that weddings are best scheduled after Shavuos rather than on Lag B'omer due to halachic considerations. He also emphasizes not changing or adding names without significant cause when traditional sources recognize them.
