The Rebbe's guidance when life goes wrong — illness, loss, tragedy, financial collapse — and the question "why?":
A hidden good. Don't pray only for the pain to stop; pray for the hardship to be revealed as the good it truly is (IK 1133). With "gam zu letovah," even hardship can be turned into revealed good (IK 8301). Difficulties are tests, and they are temporary (IK 2461, 4455, 6228). Suffering may serve an eternal purpose beyond our understanding (IK 2423).
After a loss, greater mercy. Hardship and loss arouse an even deeper Divine mercy than before, and one should look forward to seeing it (IK 1403, 3262). Don't despair (IK 1256, 8031). Live fully with faith and joy — not merely endure each day (IK 1773). The teachings of Chassidus give tools to lessen bitterness when things are beyond one's control (IK 988). Challenges can awaken one's deepest connection to G-d, but strive to reach it through joy rather than pain (IK 859).
Asking "why." Honest questions about suffering come from deep faith, not rebellion; human understanding cannot fully grasp G-d's justice, and the Jewish answer through history has been to deepen commitment and rebuild — above all by building Jewish families (IK 8969, 9323, 9425).
Losing a loved one. Mitzvos done with joy elevate a departed soul far more than acts done in sadness (IK 5651); carry on their work with growing commitment (IK 560).
Don't move away because of a tragedy. Our Rebbeim ruled that one should not uproot one's home because of a tragic event, for it is specifically there that G-d commands blessing and mercy (IK 3261, 3262). After the 1956 attack on Kfar Chabad, the Rebbe called for real action rather than words — expanding its institutions, livelihoods and security (IK 4309, 4335) — and set a fast until midday for healthy adults (IK 4281). Checked mezuzos and tefillin and strengthened mitzvos bring protection and comfort after tragedy (IK 9933).
Financial reversals. Meet them with trust, tzedakah and faithful attention to your responsibilities (IK 4279, 7103, 8058). Even after a fire, maximum effort with faith can bring growth beyond limits (IK 7493).
Accept and improve. Accept a hard situation as coming from Above while working to improve it (IK 10538). Don't let illness or hardship weigh on your heart (IK 2198).
