Shalom u'Vrachah!
I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter with thanks. Naturally, I regret that apparently I caused you confusion by what was enclosed in my previous letter; I certainly did not intend this at all—on the contrary, my entire intention was for good. As I wrote in my letter, this is at the very least a reward for idleness (i.e., a token payment), which even in earlier times and even the great ones of Israel would accept with a pleasant countenance. Furthermore—and this is most important to me—there is also an intention here to wish you success, since the sum also includes from the K.K. fund of Admor that is under my hand. My strong faith is that in this way the assurance of our Sages of blessed memory (Bava Basra 15b) is fulfilled: "He who takes a coin from the fund of a man who is simple and upright, G‑d-fearing and turns away from evil, is blessed." I myself also act similarly from time to time. My strong hope is that you will judge me favorably—and proof will be that you use what was sent for your needs and those of your household with joy and gladness of heart.
Since everything happens by Divine Providence—and you mentioned in your letter something about segulah—I am seizing the opportunity to use this as a pretext to send you (by separate mail) a copy of Sefer HaTanya by our master the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch. For all those who have tasted from the teachings of the Baal Shem Tov, his students and their students—and all the more so those who are themselves links in this golden chain—there is no better segulah than studying his teachings. The teachings of the Baal Shem Tov have been explained in an understandable way—even intellectually—in Chabad teachings, whose foundational book is Tanya.
It is clear that I cannot restrain myself from commenting at least briefly on recent events in our holy land—may it be rebuilt and established speedily in our days through Moshiach Tzidkeinu—which sometimes (especially recently) people ignore or overlook their true meaning. I refer to the uproar now caused by a non-Jew setting fire at a place considered sacred by non-Jews. Seemingly it makes no sense—why did this happen specifically during these weeks? What purpose does it serve since immediately they found out who set the fire—a non-Jew? But anyone who does not ignore current events will immediately agree there is a sign here: when there was an uproar about a place sacred to Jews—the Western Wall, remnant of our Temple—debates raged whether it was truly holy or just historic; some even prevented Jews from praying at part of it; some mistakenly decided it was merely historic. Then suddenly a non-Jew sets fire at their own sacred site—and immediately everyone agrees it's not just historic! Those same people who tried to diminish holiness at the Western Wall were first to defend their own site and denounce desecration—declaring plainly that Jews could never be involved in such desecration.
This event—the "voice of my beloved knocks: Open for me my sister, my beloved..." (Song of Songs)—is knocking on every Jewish heart; certainly also on those mistaken souls—children captured among non-Jews who do not know better. In these days—days of segulah and Divine favor—may it be G‑d's will that hearts open even slightly (as our Sages say: "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle...") so that immediately G‑d fulfills His promise: "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle and I will open for you an opening like the entrance to a hall"—the higher teshuvah.
With honor and blessings for being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year—to you and all your household.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that acts done with good intent bring blessing both materially and spiritually. Studying Tanya connects one deeply with Chassidus as a powerful segulah. Events in Eretz Yisrael call us to reflect inwardly and open our hearts toward teshuvah.
