Mr. Yitzchak Koren.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter in due course with the good news that the matter of the yeshiva in Kiryat Gat has entered a more practical stage, as well as your previous letter. Please forgive me for the delayed response due to many preoccupations and recently also because of the tragedy in Agadir.
Although recent reports from Agadir have informed us of the rescue of a certain number of students—thank G‑d—even one Jewish soul is a whole world, all the more so when it is many. May it be G‑d's will that our fellow Jews everywhere should not experience any distressing matters and that all strengths and resources be used for good things, going from strength to strength and light to light.
In continuation of this wish, I hope that over time there has also been good progress in Kiryat Gat and certainly you will not withhold good news from me; my heartfelt thanks are expressed to you in advance.
I read with special interest about the opening of the seminary for religious teachers. Certainly, as in the style of the Megillah, it will be conducted "datayhem shonot mikol am" (their laws are different from every nation), with emphasis on this point.
I stress these words in connection with a strange report that appeared in the press here—as if they are introducing into school curricula in Eretz HaKodesh Tivu (the Holy Land may it be rebuilt) studies and comparisons between world religions—religions in plural. Even if one would say they will emphasize "datayhem shonot mikol am" (their laws are different from every nation), it is still astonishing: why confuse students regarding Christianity, Islam, etc.? Even stranger is that according to this report such studies would be included even in secular schools’ curricula.
In normal years I would say there is no basis for this report; but specifically in our times our Sages’ saying applies: "Do not dismiss anything lightly."
Ending on a positive note: what you wrote at the end of your letter about your impression from Yud Tes Kislev in Kfar Chabad and the feeling of enthusiasm etc.—may it be G‑d’s will that this enthusiasm and impression continue for each participant throughout the entire year, especially in this auspicious year—the two-hundredth anniversary of the passing-hilulah of the founder of Chassidus, our teacher the Baal Shem Tov z"ya (may his merit protect us)—whose purpose was to awaken the essence of every Jew’s soul, as hinted at also by his holy name—Yisrael.
As we stand after Purim—about which it is said "LaYehudim hayta orah v'simchah v'sasson v'yikar" (For the Jews there was light and gladness and joy and honor)—literally so (for no verse loses its plain meaning), as well as its inner meaning per our Sages’ teaching: "orah zu Torah" (light means Torah) etc.—may it be so for each one of us within all Israel.
Summary
The Rebbe highlights both communal responsibility during tragedy and pride in Jewish educational uniqueness. He encourages using every opportunity for growth and maintaining spiritual enthusiasm throughout the year.
