Shalom u'Vrachah!

Mrs. Sarah tichyeh Ganzburg

Blessings and greetings! I received your letter in due course, and for various reasons my response was delayed until now. You wrote about the passing of your mother, may she rest in peace—may you, all the children, and your father be distinguished for long good life—and about your feelings and thoughts connected with this.

Truly, none of us can fully comprehend the ways of Hashem Yisbarach v'Yisaleh, Who creates man and guides him with individual Divine Providence. But it is certain that He is the essence of good; as is well known—'it is the nature of good to do good.' When sometimes G‑d's ways are completely beyond human understanding, this is not surprising at all: what comparison is there between a limited, finite being and the Infinite One? Still, Hashem desired to reveal some of His wisdom to flesh-and-blood humans through His holy Torah—called Torah Or (Torah of Light) and Toras Chaim (Torah of Life)—which illuminates a person's path so that its light can be grasped even by our limited faculties.

According to what is explained in our Written and Oral Torahs, we can find some explanation—even if only partial—for such an event as yours. The explanation essentially lies in two halachic rulings which seem contradictory but are both found in the same section of Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh Deah 394): At its start: 'One should not overly grieve (regarding mourning etc.), as our Sages instructed; whoever does so...' (see there). At its end: 'Anyone who does not mourn as our Sages instructed is considered cruel.' If it is natural to mourn such an event, why criticize those who mourn excessively—even stating that their punishment is severe? And if their punishment is so severe for excessive mourning, then how can insufficient mourning be called cruelty?

The explanation lies at the end of that section discussing mourning—in the words of Shulchan Aruch quoting Rambam: 'He should fear and worry and examine his deeds and repent.' It is clear that the soul is eternal; there is no reason to think that physical illness or death could diminish or nullify the life of the soul. This loss affects only flesh-and-blood themselves—their connection with soul. That means a break in connection—death—whereby the soul ascends and is freed from bodily limitations; through its good deeds while in this world it rises even higher than before entering a body. As it’s known: 'The descent of the soul into a body is for an ascent,' an ascent even greater than before its descent.

From this we understand that all those close to this soul must recognize that it has ascended even higher than before; but for those living in this world it feels like a loss. The closer one was to her, the more precious her ascent—but also greater pain from separation from body and life here. Additionally, one might think her soul could have risen even higher specifically through further deeds in this world—as our Sages say: 'One hour of teshuvah and good deeds in this world surpasses all life in the World to Come.'

Since such an event contains these two opposing aspects—the soul’s release from bodily bonds ascending to a higher world (the World of Truth), yet also a real loss—the two halachic rulings result: For the set time prescribed by our Sages according to Torah truth there must be mourning; but one must not overdo it (not add days or intensify mourning during those days). Moreover, mourning’s purpose is for the living—to reflect on why this loss occurred; hence he should fear, worry, examine his deeds and repent.

This also strengthens connection between those living here with the departed soul above—for she exists eternally and observes what happens with her loved ones below; every good deed they do brings her satisfaction—especially those performed by those she raised with values leading them to such deeds. In other words: she has a share in these acts through her education.

Since all these are directives from our Torah—which is G‑d’s wisdom and will—fulfilling them constitutes serving Hashem about which it says: 'Serve Hashem with joy.' Since Torah commands each person thus—and every commandment also grants strength—it’s certain everyone can fulfill this properly; moreover—as stated—'Serve Hashem with joy.'

All this applies to every family member—but especially so for those who influence others by their example; therefore first responsibility falls on head of family or eldest child—in your case I mean you and your father.

And here too applies: 'You have labored and you have found.' This also answers your question about how you might ease things—the answer follows from above: by conducting yourself according to these teachings with strong trust in Hashem for success.

May you have only good news regarding all these matters—good that is visible and revealed.

Blessings for success in all your affairs—with blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that while mourning has its place according to Torah law, one must balance grief with faith in Hashem’s goodness. The soul ascends higher after leaving this world; positive actions by loved ones continue to benefit it above.
