Land of Israel – Security and the wholeness of the Land

ארץ ישראל – בטחון ושלמות הארץ

The Rebbe's letters on the security of Eretz Yisrael and the wholeness of the Land. These letters express the Rebbe's own position on questions that are debated; they are presented here as his guidance.

No territorial concessions. The Rebbe warned against giving up territory, because of the real danger it poses to Jewish lives and security (IK 9613). He urged honest assessment rather than self-deception in national security decisions, and analyzed how outside pressure shifted policy (IK 10200, 10201). Commitment to the Land's complete borders should be unwavering (IK 9833).

Chevron and Jerusalem. Chevron's spiritual status is secure, but its political future depends on the Jewish people's own resolve (IK 9618, 9914, 9927). He urged vigilance against laws restricting Jewish presence in Chevron and against complacency about Jerusalem's status (IK 10005), and wrote candidly about the policy challenges regarding both (IK 9549).

Eretz Yisrael and the State. He distinguished between Eretz Yisrael, the Land given by G-d as an eternal inheritance, and the State of Israel as a political entity (IK 9716). Defending Israel is a mitzvah according to Torah law, even without full religious observance, and miracles can come through those who defend it (IK 9378). Gratitude for the miracles of the Six Day War should be expressed through more Torah study and holiness rather than by changing established religious practice (IK 9573).

Those responsible for security. He encouraged those in charge of Israel's defense to stay in their vital posts, since stability in security roles matters especially in sensitive times (IK 9844, 9953, 9964), and blessed commanders and their soldiers (IK 10917, 10926). Observing Shabbos and the Torah's laws is itself connected with the security of the Land (IK 4733).
