Postscript. Shalom u'Vrachah!

Your letter was received as above, along with a copy of my response to Rabbi Levinger who also addressed this matter to your honor. As I wrote in my letter, I had great doubt whether to write the above at all, and even after resolving the doubt—the writing came out very brief. I spoke about this at greater length with Vavac"h etc. Mar Y. Alinson. One of my intentions (as I requested from him) was that he convey my words to your honor, since for understandable reasons I did not want to put them in writing as long as there was an option to avoid danger, G‑d forbid, to lives—by other means.

I rely on your honor's understanding, as I also told Mr. Alinson, regarding whether to convey the content of my letter to those who approached you about Chevron and similar matters, as well as regarding the content of my conversation with Mr. Alinson—even though in any case I requested that these things be conveyed to Mr. Ch.M. Shapira, since according to reports he is among the main proponents and organizers supporting returning territories (even partially), which endangers not only border security but security throughout Eretz Yisrael in the natural order—and so forth.

[And the wisdom behind pressuring army and security personnel not to state their opinions openly on this matter with full force—I do not understand at all.] Especially since there is no benefit or gain in returning territories; their words are falsehoods, as seen previously regarding all promises of peace and so forth.

And in Rashi's language from Beha'aloscha (Bamidbar 9:1) last week: "It is a known law that Esav hates Yaakov," and our Sages greatly elaborated on all aspects of "the kindness of nations is sin." It is clear they will gain nothing by returning territories—as seen previously and even recently when they returned twelve years ago from the Suez Canal and so on.

Especially in this past year—every time publicity increases about returning territories or charity for non-Jews—a wave of terrorism increases, leading even to casualties among Jews in Eretz Yisrael—as has been clearly observed.

As I wrote in the attached copy of my letter—there is much more to elaborate here—but these are matters where silence is preferable. It is not appropriate for a letter to speak negatively about Jews—especially since it is forbidden to speak negatively about Jews.

It is astonishing how correct our Sages' words are at every step: "Whoever adds diminishes," which explains why both prohibitions—do not add and do not subtract—are written together (Devarim 4:2; see also Devarim 13:1). Specifically those who are most zealous claim that a new mitzvah has been added in our era (aliyah to Eretz Yisrael), counted among the 613 mitzvos (contrary to Rambam), and some say everything depends only on this mitzvah—even permitting public Shabbos desecration for it—and have added more claims that we are already in the beginning of redemption—contrary to explicit rulings in Rambam [who certainly knew all sources]. Yet among them are many who wish to return territories or parts thereof.

I do not wish to elaborate further because I fear interfering with your thought process [as I once heard from our mutual friend—that in his meetings with people he tries to find what unites them rather than what divides them; certainly this applies between us—I hope this is reciprocated]. Even now I would not have written all this if not for seeing that declaring "the beginning of redemption" poses a danger. This is the only explanation I found for the casualties among Jews in Eretz Yisrael—including survivors of the Holocaust who saw open miracles but still fell unnaturally—as above.

The explanation resembles what happens whenever a false messiah arises and draws followers—it ends with casualties, G‑d forbid. Similarly with the idea that redemption has already begun—even though there have been miraculous salvations for millions of Jews—it is not yet redemption from this fourth exile; rather, by all signs it is a further descent into darkness—calling darkness light, etc.

The bitter result: another Jew falls victim in Eretz Yisrael—and another casualty—as above.

Incidentally, I received information responding to my claim about the danger posed by relinquishing any territory (as elaborated above), which was conveyed by a trustworthy source—and reportedly reached government officials; their response was that they pay no heed to arguments or evidence coming from someone who never once visited Eretz Yisrael—even though my claim was always that millions of Jews living there are endangered—not a personal matter—but based on "accept truth from whoever says it." And so much for "the beginning of redemption."

To my argument—that there is an explicit ruling in Rambam (who certainly knew all relevant sources)—the response was quoting interpretations from others without mentioning Rambam at all—even from those who know practical halachah follows poskim—not midrashim or even serious Talmudic discussions—once halachah has been decided by later authorities whose rulings guide us until Mashiach comes.

By the way—a strange argument was presented: there are several places where it says or implies "this is the beginning of redemption"—even though those explanations have no relevance here! It resembles the story in Eichah Rabbah (1:51): at the destruction of the Temple a Jew's cow bellowed; an Arab said now the Temple has been destroyed; immediately after it bellowed again—the Arab said now Israel's redeemer has been born—that's called "the beginning of redemption." Clearly that's not our discussion here.

Moreover—it is well known from Rav Schneur Zalman that before lofty souls like Rashbi—the Temple was never destroyed at all (see Pelach HaRimon Parshas Shemos p.77); surely Admor Hazaken knew Rashbi hid thirteen years from Roman decrees. And see Chana Ariel Toldos (47b): Tannaim, Amoraim and great tzaddikim.

Because of its importance—I repeat again: Why does it bother me so much when Jews convince themselves redemption has already begun? After all—it makes people happier! And joy among Bnei Yisrael is indeed important—especially per Chassidus—but as above—the punishment for misleading oneself here is severe.

Summary

The Rebbe warns against territorial concessions due to real dangers for Jewish lives and security. He cautions against misinterpreting current events as signs of redemption, emphasizing clarity over wishful thinking and urging responsibility when discussing matters affecting Klal Yisrael's safety.
