על נפש אחת מישראל הרי זה כמגין על עולם מלא, על אחת כמה אלה אשר ההשגחה העליונה מסרה להם התפקיד האחראי להגן על רבבות אלפי ישראל.
ארשה לעצמי להוסיף שורות אחדות, ותקותי אשר יקבל הדברים בסבר פנים יפות ובלבביות, כפי שנאמרו.

מלתי אמורה בכמה הזדמנויות על דבר גודל ענין מצות התפילין. ואף שכל מצוה ומצוה גדולה וחשובה ובעלת ערך הכי נעלה, ציוויו של מלך מלכי המלכים הקדוש ברוך הוא, אשר בחסדו הגדול ובטובו האינסופי נתן לישראל עם קרובו את התורה ומצוותי',
והודיע
אשר מתענג הוא כאשר בן ובת ישראל מקיימים רצונו,
הרי רצה הקב"ה, מצַוה המצוות, וחילק אותן לכמה סוגים, והודיע בתורתנו הנקראת
תורה אור
, המאירה לאדם דרכו בחיים, סגולות מיוחדות אשר בכל מצוה ומצוה.
ומסגולות מצות תפילין הרי גם זו אשר –
בלשון הכתוב
– "וראו כל עמי הארץ כי שם ה' נקרא עליך ויראו ממך". ועוד סגולה, אשר
בזכות
התפילין שמניחים על היד ועל הראש, באה הברכה "וטרף זרוע אף קדקוד".

ישראל חברים, בני משפחה אחת, ועוד יותר אשר
כל
ישראל קומה אחת שלימה, הרי זה
כדוגמת אברים
של גוף אחד, שהטבה לאבר אחד מוסיפה הטבה לכל שאר האברים, זאת אומרת טובת יהודי אחד היא טובת כל עם ישראל.
על אחת כמה וכמה כשהמדובר הוא באנשי הצבא עצמם, ועוד יותר בהעומדים בראשם ומנהיגים אותם, הרי קיום מצוה זו על ידם מגדילה ביותר
האימה
ופחד על כל אויב וצר, עד שלפעמים רבות לא נותרה בו רוח לעשות מלחמה, ואפילו כשבאים לידי מלחמה, אז מתקיימת הברכה וטרף זרוע אף קדקוד ומנצחים אותו.
ואם בתכסיסי מלחמה משתמשים בכל נשק האפשרי, אפילו אם התועלת מוטלת בספק, ואפילו אם יביא תועלת רק לקבוצה קטנה או אפילו לאישים בודדים, ולא עוד אלא שמשתדלים להשיגו ואין חסים על טורח וממון וכו', ובלבד להפעיל גם נשק כזה, על אחת כמה וכמה בנוגע ל"נשק" האמור, קיום מצות תפילין, אשר התועלת האמורה מעידים עלי' רבותינו זכרונם לברכה מדורי דורות, ומעידים גם על ההיקף שלה, כוונתי שהיא לטובתם של המניח תפילין וסביבתו הקרובה וגם הרחוקה, ועד לכל עם ישראל כולו בכל מקום שנמצא שם.
וגדול זכותם של כל המקיימים מצוה זו, ובפרט מתוך שמחה וחיות, וגדול לאין ערוך זכותם של אלה המזכים גם אחרים בקיום מצוה זו. והרי יכולת מיוחדת להמפקדים והקצינים והמנהיגים וכולי, שבטבע האדם שהוא מתרשם מהעומד על גביו אפילו בשטח שלכאורה אין לו כל שייכות ליחסים השגרתיים שביניהם.

Through our friend Mr. Shlomo Midanchik I received your request for a blessing for improved health and healing, and I will mention you at the resting place of my revered father-in-law the Admor. May it be G‑d's will that just as I received your request, so too I will receive good news regarding the above.
Your efforts to defend the holy nation residing in the Holy Land will stand by you to hasten your recovery so that it will be both swift and complete. May you be blessed with all good in everything needed for you and your household.
If one who protects even a single Jewish soul is considered as if he protected an entire world, how much more so those whom Divine Providence has entrusted with the responsible task of protecting tens of thousands of Jews.
Allow me to add a few lines, hoping you will receive these words graciously and warmly as they are intended.
I have already spoken on several occasions about the great importance of the mitzvah of tefillin. Although every mitzvah is great and important—being a command from the King of kings, the Holy One blessed be He—Who in His great kindness gave His Torah and mitzvos to Israel His close nation, and Who informed us that He takes delight when a Jewish man or woman fulfills His will; nevertheless, G‑d divided mitzvos into various categories and revealed in our Torah—called Torah Or (Torah of Light), which illuminates one's path in life—the special qualities unique to each mitzvah.
Among the special qualities of tefillin is what is written: 'Ve'ra'u kol amei ha'aretz ki shem Hashem nikra alecha veyar'u mimeka' (And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of Hashem is called upon you and they shall fear you). Another quality: through tefillin placed on hand and head comes blessing—'Ve'teref zero'a af kadkod' (He will shatter arms as well as skulls).
Since all Jews are friends—one family—and even more so since all Israel forms one complete body, like organs in a single body where benefit to one organ increases benefit to all others; thus, good for one Jew is good for all Israel.
How much more so when it concerns soldiers themselves—and even more so those who lead them—that their fulfillment of this mitzvah greatly increases awe and fear among every enemy or adversary; often their spirit to wage war is broken entirely. Even when war does occur, then comes true 'Ve'teref zero'a af kadkod' (He will shatter arms as well as skulls) and they are victorious.
If in military tactics every possible weapon is used—even if its benefit is doubtful or only helps a small group or even individuals—and efforts are made to obtain it regardless of trouble or expense just to use such a weapon; how much more so regarding this weapon—the fulfillment of tefillin—which our Sages testify throughout generations about its benefits and scope: it brings good not only to those who put on tefillin but also their close environment—even distant ones—and ultimately all Jews everywhere.
Great is the merit of all who fulfill this mitzvah—especially with joy and vitality—and infinitely greater is the merit of those who enable others to fulfill it too.
Commanders, officers, leaders etc., have a special ability since human nature is such that people are influenced by those above them—even in areas seemingly unrelated to their usual interactions.
With respect and esteem; with blessings for a speedy recovery and good news regarding all mentioned above; with Hashem's blessing in everything needed for you and your household.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that fulfilling tefillin brings protection and blessing not only to oneself but also to all Israel—especially when done by those defending or leading others. Spreading this mitzvah increases merit for everyone involved.
