בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ב אדר א', בו כותב אודות הלימודים שלו עם בחורי חמד ועם בע"ב שי', כ"י.
וכמדומה כבר כתבתי לו בהכרח ההשתדלות באופן המתאים אבל עד כדי
ליגיעה - בהנוגע לבחורי ישיבה, כיון שחלק מסויים מהם נעשים בהמשך הזמן למורי דרך לרבים מבנ"י, שלכן כל הטבה במצבם (וככל עניני קדושה הרי תמיד יש להוסיף בהם, מאחר שקשורים בהקב"ה שהוא אין סופי) הרי ההטבה נכפלת פי כמה בהמושפעים שלהם.
וגם אותם יש להסבירם, אשר אי אפשר שיסתפקו ויעמידו עצמם על דינה של תורה, שאם בהנוגע לסתם בנ"י אמרו חז"ל לא חרבה ירושלים אלא מפני שהעמידו דבריהם על דין תורה, ואף שבית המקדש הי' קיים אז, וראו אלקות במוחש, וכדבר משנה עשרה נסים נעשו לאבותנו. עאכו"כ בתקופתנו חשך כפול ומכופל דעקבתא דמשיחא, ובהנוגע לכאלו שעמא דבר מביט עליהם כעל אלו שיש להתלמד מהנהגתם, ולא עוד אלא שעושין חשבון, שאם פלוני מתנהג ככה, הלא בשביל עמא דבר מספיק חלק וכו', שמזה מובן שעל בן ישיבה להתנהג בכפלים לתושי'. והרי זהו גם הדין בנגלה דתורה, דטופח ע"מ להטפיח, וק"ל.

ובפרט שהרי נמצאים אנו בחדש אדר, עליו נאמר שנהפוך הוא לשמחה וליום טוב.

I pleasantly received your letter from the 22nd of Adar I, in which you write about your studies with fine young men and with baalei batim, may they live and be well. As I believe I have already written to you, it is necessary to make an effort in the appropriate way—up to the point of exertion—regarding yeshiva students. This is because a certain portion of them will eventually become guides for many among Bnei Yisrael; therefore, any improvement in their state (and as with all matters of holiness, there is always room to add, since they are connected to the Holy One Blessed Be He Who is infinite) results in a multiplied benefit for those influenced by them.
They too must be explained that it is impossible to suffice or settle only for the strict law of Torah. For if regarding ordinary Jews our Sages said that Jerusalem was destroyed only because they insisted on the strict law of Torah—even though at that time the Beit HaMikdash still stood and G‑dliness was openly seen, as stated in the Mishnah: ten miracles were performed for our ancestors—how much more so in our era, a doubled and redoubled darkness of Ikveta d'Meshicha (the footsteps before Mashiach), and especially concerning those whom the public looks up to as examples from whom to learn behavior. Furthermore, people reason: if so-and-so behaves this way, then for ordinary people a partial measure suffices, etc. From this it is understood that a yeshiva student must conduct himself doubly strengthened.
This is also the law in Nigleh d'Torah: "tofe'ach al menat lehatfiach" (one who absorbs so as to impart further), and this is clear.
May Hashem be with his mouth and grant success in all the above.
The pidyon nefesh enclosed in your letter will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal nishmaso Eden. May it be G‑d's will that just as you brought your request, so too you will bring good news regarding this matter—especially since we are now in the month of Adar about which it is said: "it was transformed for them from sorrow to joy and from mourning to a festive day."
