(You are standing today...), there is no contradiction here, for they stood to enter into the covenant at the time of entering the Land, and this aspect recurs every year on Rosh Hashanah. As for what you wrote about the obligation of Matanot LaEvyonim beyond the mitzvah of tzedakah—it's clear that it is a rabbinic commandment to seek out the needy, even regarding a poor person, etc., and not just a good custom like giving tzedakah before prayer, etc.
