Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 24th of Elul with the enclosed pan, which will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, in which you write about your idea to learn the craft of Safrus (writing Torah scrolls, tefillin, and mezuzos). This is very appropriate for many reasons.
Certainly it is unnecessary to remind you that a sofer STaM must greatly increase his awe of Heaven (Yiras Shamayim). However, the Holy One, blessed be He, does not make unreasonable demands on His creations and grants in advance the ability and strength for this. The matter depends only on the person himself; moreover, additional assistance is given from Above—as our Sages say: "One who comes to purify himself is assisted." See Likkutei Torah Devarim 89d.
With blessings for a good inscription and sealing in the Book of Life.
Summary
The Rebbe encourages learning Safrus and stresses that with sincere effort in Yiras Shamayim, one receives both inner strength and Divine assistance to succeed in this holy work.
