The Path of Rectification: A Firm Resolution, Torah Engraved in Memory, and Not Fasts or Self-Affliction

This letter guides a man seeking to rectify a known matter: first a firm resolution for the future; then Torah learned by heart, Tehillim, daily study, tzedakah before prayer and support for Jewish education. Fasting, which weakens health and understanding, is replaced by the Rebbe Maharash's fast of guarding one's speech.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In answer to your letters of Erev Shabbos Kodesh, the one before it, and that of Thursday, in which you write about a tikkun (rectification) for the known matter.

Now, in all matters of rectification it is plain that first of all there must be a good resolution for the future regarding actual conduct — in the Rambam's words, that he will not return to his folly again, etc.[1]

As for rectifying the past: the letters of Torah, and especially the letters of Mishnayos and of the inner dimension of the Torah, that is, the teachings of Chassidus, must be engraved in your memory; then, even at a time you are not thinking of them, they are engraved in the faculty of memory — as explained in several places, among them in Likkutei Torah of the Alter Rebbe, end of Parshas Kedoshim.

It is therefore proper that you know by heart several chapters of Mishnayos and several chapters of Tanya. In addition to the monthly portion of Tehillim — as Tehillim is divided among the days of the month — which you surely take care to say each day after Shacharis, and the chapter of Tehillim corresponding to the number of your years, you should say each day a few more chapters of Tehillim, also in order; the number of these chapters depends on the amount of free time you have. You should also have a set study, both for fluency and for in-depth learning, in the revealed part of the Torah and in its inner part; the length of these study periods, too, depends on your free time.

It is also known that it is a segulah to give a few coins to tzedakah every weekday before the morning prayer.

Also known is the matter of making efforts for the kosher education of Jewish boys and girls in a fitting way — that is, by exertion with one's body, one's soul or one's money.

And let it be known that regarding the fasts brought in several books, see Igeres HaTeshuvah of the Alter Rebbe, beginning of chapter 3[2], and this is its wording: "However, all this applies to a strong and healthy person, etc., but, etc., as in these generations of ours, etc." Moreover, one sees plainly that fasting affects one's health and thereby also the power of understanding and comprehension and the power of contemplation; if so, the gain is outweighed by the loss[3]. Therefore, how good it is to fast in the manner of the saying of the Rebbe Maharash (printed in Toldos Maharash, p. 72): that one should muzzle one's mouth from speaking undesirable things, etc., for this too is an affliction — and on the contrary, in the great majority of cases it is a greater affliction than the affliction of abstaining from food and drink, as is evidently felt. I hope that when you act as described, you will see real improvement soon, increasing more from time to time. It is understood that you should not be impressed by the battle of the yetzer against the above, with various strange arguments, among them reasons it clothes in the garment of fear of Heaven — that is, that instead of occupying yourself with the above you should be in seclusion and withdrawal, fast and afflict yourself, etc., etc. For, due to our many sins, in our generation, an orphaned generation, one sees the results of such conduct, which frequently leads to things that are the opposite of the aim and intention; and enough said to the understanding.

With blessing for good tidings in all the above.

Regarding what you write of various considerations about getting settled and your manner of earning a livelihood — you should consult about this with your friends who are on the spot and also know your abilities. May Hashem, blessed be He, give them the right idea how to advise you for the good, materially and spiritually.

Notes

[1] That he will not return to his folly again (שלא ישוב לכסלה עוד): see Rambam, Hilchos Teshuvah 2:2: "and He Who knows all hidden things will testify about him that he will never return to this sin." The word "folly" follows Tehillim 85:9, "and let them not return to folly."

[2] Igeres HaTeshuvah, chapter 3: Tanya, Igeres HaTeshuvah ch. 3.

[3] The gain is outweighed by the loss (יצא שכרו בהפסדו): the wording of the Mishnah, Avos 5:11. The loss to health, understanding and contemplation is greater than the benefit of the fast.
