Teaching Gemara to a Girl Through Practical Sugyos, and the Necessity of Learning Chassidus

This letter answers a teacher unsure about learning Gemara with an eleven-year-old girl: choose sugyos connected to practice, which fall under women's study as the Alter Rebbe rules. It urges adding Chassidus to his study with another man, explained through Kuntres Etz Chaim, and blesses his wife for an easy birth.

B"H, 20 Marcheshvan, 5717

Brooklyn.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In answer to your letter of 17 Marcheshvan, with what was enclosed in it.

At an auspicious time they will mention you and your wife, may you both live, and all those you write about, at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of sainted memory, whose soul is in the hidden treasuries on high, may his merit protect us.

Regarding what you write, that you are in doubt about learning Gemara with a girl of eleven: if it comes easily to her, you should arrange to learn such sugyos as are connected with matters of practice, for then this falls within the category of what women study, as explained in Hilchos Talmud Torah of the Alter Rebbe, end of chapter 1[1]; see there.

And such tractates and sugyos are many in number — especially since she is close to the age of accepting the yoke of mitzvos, twelve years for a girl.

It is surprising that in the study you hold with Mr. ..., may he live, there is no mention of learning Chassidus. And even if you will say that he does not feel the need for it, on the contrary — this itself is proof of the necessity of learning it with him; and this is easy to understand.

Especially as I hope that, having already spent time within the walls of Tomchei Temimim, the situation is not so; rather, you are surely reckoning that since your time of learning together is limited, it should be used for the study you mention but not for the above. But when you explain to him the matter of "kav chumtin" and the content of the matters explained in Kuntres Etz Chaim, he will surely agree easily, and will even ask to devote some of your study time together to learning Chassidus. May Hashem, blessed be He, grant you to report good news in all the above.

With blessing for success in your holy work, you and your wife, may you both live, in proper health.

May Hashem, blessed be He, bring your wife's days of pregnancy to completion properly and easily, and may she give birth to living and enduring offspring at the right time, properly and easily.

With blessing.
