True Involvement in Chabad Activities and the Role of Personal Responsibility

The Rebbe addresses the need for genuine involvement in Chabad activities, emphasizing that excuses and blame are unproductive. He distinguishes between those who work as hired hands and those who act as true owners, urging personal responsibility and active participation for meaningful results.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 14th of Iyar and the one before it, in which you write about the state of Chabad "askanus" (community activism) in various fields—and to quote a saying attributed to Harav HaChassid etc. etc. Reb Shmuel HaLevi Levitin: even when one finds good excuses, in practice nothing will come of it. The same applies here.

As I have written several times: for me, it makes little difference who is at fault or who is right, because our holy Rebbeim have instructed us that we are workers of the day—to bring light. The role of a worker is to see to it that the job gets done and to strive for its completion. Even if you were correct in all your claims from your first letter, you are still not utilizing all the opportunities available in Eretz HaKodesh. Especially since there are many responses to your points.

The main point is that each person looks at these matters as something that needs to be done but participates as if he were an outsider. Therefore, if he is invited or at least his instructions are fully followed, he participates; otherwise—what more can he do? "I have saved my own soul." It is well known—the difference between an official or employee who works faithfully on a matter and the owner himself: the former do their best with their revealed abilities and then go to sleep peacefully, feeling they have done their part; but the owner cannot rest even if he has done his utmost—so hidden powers and new ideas emerge.

The truth must be said: regarding this work... for now—I do not see that people are working even as faithful employees, i.e., doing their utmost. Please forgive me for expressing my opinion so bluntly.

I was pleased by what you wrote about devotion... to work in... However, from your letter I see that everyone is satisfied that this person works with devotion and they gladly give him all the reward—for himself alone. But no one helps him.

I am already tired of repeating again and again that every single day that passes allows opportunities to slip by—to do things for the Alter Rebbe, for the Mitteler Rebbe, for the tzt"z and all our Nesi'im who succeeded them. And this is a loss that cannot be recovered.

Since you did not mention anything about your health or your wife's health, I assume everything is fine and peaceful. May Hashem bring peace among Anash (our community), and may this be a vessel not only to receive G‑d's blessing within it but also to draw down Hashem's blessing—to each one with all necessary good both materially and spiritually.

Summary

This letter teaches that true impact comes from personal responsibility and genuine involvement—not just fulfilling one's duty superficially or waiting for others' initiative. Every missed opportunity is irreplaceable; we must act proactively for our community's mission.
