Blessings and greetings!

In response to your letter in which you write about the situation in your home regarding shalom bayis (marital harmony), following up on what we discussed previously on this matter, and you ask my opinion based on your current circumstances.

In my opinion it is clear that the situation depends on the goodwill of both parties. In the vast majority of shalom bayis matters it depends more on the wife than the husband. Despite everything you write, I remain firm in my previous opinion that with your goodwill you can, together with your husband sheyichyeh, strengthen your home with the vessel that holds G‑d's blessing—peace.

Even though our Sages said that people's opinions are not alike, it is known from our holy Torah—a Torah of life—that everyone must overlook their own traits. When you consider that your husband works hard to develop what he has established and to grow it under current conditions—it is difficult work that exhausts both body and soul—it is no wonder if he is irritable and sometimes reacts more sharply than necessary. Then naturally you will respond to his behavior differently and there will be peace in your home; as a result there will also be blessing regarding livelihood and raising all your children sheyichyu for Torah, marriage, and good deeds.

Since you write that some time ago you both visited Rabbi... sheyichyeh together but left things unresolved, I think it would be good for both of you to visit him again as soon as possible—specifically together.

May it be G‑d's will that through much counsel you find the way for peace to come to your home as soon as possible. It is known from our Sages' blessing: "Ish v'Isha zachu" (if a man and woman merit—using plural language meaning it depends on both), then the Shechinah dwells between them. And Hashem has already said: "Pischu li kechudo shel machat va'Ani eftach lachem kepitcho shel ulam" (Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle and I will open for you like a great hall).

The conclusion from all the above is that a woman in Lashon HaKodesh is called akeres habayis—the mainstay of the home—and primarily upon her rests the conduct of the home in general and especially its measure of peace. Nothing stands before one's will. My intention here is not—as you express in your letter—to suffer pain G‑d forbid just to remain married; rather it is to overcome the enticement of the yetzer hara and build together a successful home full of peace and blessing, influencing others in this direction as well.

I await good news that you have firmly decided to do everything within your power to fulfill these matters above, and may Hashem grant you success.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that shalom bayis relies greatly on the wife's goodwill and effort. By focusing on understanding, seeking guidance together with her husband, and overcoming challenges with determination, she can bring peace and blessing into her home.
