Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was pleased to receive your letter from the second day of Chanukah in which you write that the students were tested and you see success in their learning, and also about the farbrengen you arranged on the 19th and 20th of Kislev. Although you write that this farbrengen did not have the same taste as in... see Tanya chapter 27 regarding the precise wording of the verse 'Ve'aseh li matamim' ("Make me delicacies") in plural form. Between these two types of delicacies, one cannot know which is more pleasing Above; therefore, it must also be enjoyable below.
The main thing is known from the parable of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: wherever the general places a soldier—if the general is good—the soldier can be sure that he has been chosen for him as the best fitting place where it can be maximally good for him and also beneficial for the war and victory. Although this should not prevent the soldier from requesting a higher rank for himself, as long as he does not have it yet, he should be extremely happy that by fulfilling his mission he is connected with the entire leadership of the country. The analogy is understood.
Hopefully, you made use of the Chanukah days both regarding the children and regarding adults—telling them that Jews have always faced challenges, perhaps even greater than those now—and when one stands with proper strength, one succeeds not only spiritually but also materially.
Regarding your question about how to teach: it is self-understood that one must teach students each letter separately and each vowel separately—as is known from the campaign led by Gedolei Yisrael and our holy leaders—to instill in children the holiness of each letter and each vowel.
Blessings for success in material livelihood and success in spiritual livelihood and all good things.
The delay in sending this letter was due to a certain reason. Meanwhile your letter from the 4th of Teves arrived... that you understood this test and traveled to a small town to spread Judaism even though business is not yet as you would like; I reckon now business can already improve. I hope that if you are tested through abundance—many customers—you will also withstand this "exam" and continue your holy work in the town. Certainly it will be successful.
And more than what the host does for the poor person, the poor person does for the host.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that our Divine service must be meaningful both above and below; we should serve with joy wherever we are placed by Divine Providence, persist through challenges, and recognize our efforts benefit both ourselves and others.
