Shalom u'Vrachah!

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter... and regarding this week's Torah portion: the very first commandment in it, right at the beginning and head of the section, is a command that also encompasses all matters of Torah and its mitzvot: Kedoshim Tihyu (You shall be holy). By way of introduction—the command is directed to the entire congregation of Bnei Yisrael, and in explaining the reason for the command—it is because 'I am holy, Hashem your G‑d.'

It is well known that there is a question about the content of the command 'Kedoshim Tihyu' and what is novel about it, since this is essentially the theme of all Torah and its mitzvot and each individual commandment. The explanation is that this command concerns something general: that we should separate ourselves from permitted things—even though we were not warned against them in Torah nor are they forbidden to us—we are cautioned to be clean, pure, and separated from them.

Seemingly one might say—especially when making an honest self-assessment and evaluating one's own situation—that it suffices to avoid what Torah forbids; if only one would fulfill all explicit commandments—those from the Torah itself, from our Sages, down to even minor stringencies. Only someone who has already reached such a level should engage in this higher work—separating even from permitted things. Therefore, Scripture prefaces and emphasizes that this directive is addressed to all of Bnei Yisrael without exception. The reason for the command is 'for I am Hashem your G‑d,' which makes it clear that every single person is included in this directive since each one was told 'I am Hashem your G‑d,' which is both its reason and basis.

Yet still the question remains: How can one attain such holy service—to sanctify oneself even with what is permitted—when he struggles with what is forbidden (at least with minor transgressions that people tend to tread upon)? The answer lies within this very verse itself—according to another explanation—which clarifies how it is possible to fulfill this command: The directive was given to all of Bnei Yisrael together; then they are like one complete entity. Especially since this section was said in assembly—that is, everyone actually gathered together—and great is the power and merit of the many, especially when it comes to all Bnei Yisrael.

An additional empowerment comes through stating the reason: 'for I am holy.' If you sanctify yourselves, I consider it as if you have sanctified Me. This inspires excitement when a person contemplates that by fulfilling this commandment it is considered as if he has sanctified his G‑d; such contemplation arouses his inner strengths—tremendous powers—to overcome any obstacle or hindrance and fulfill 'Kedoshim Tihyu' fully and completely.

And by fulfilling 'Kedoshim Tihyu,' we receive its reward (as further explained on this verse): for (through this) 'I will be holy among you,' so we merit cleaving to Him by being holy.

May it be G‑d's will that each and every one fulfills all of the above—and as further explained on this verse—based on what is known that a command also implies future fulfillment and assurance—the promise will be completely fulfilled: you will be holy—a holiness so elevated that "it could be said" it resembles Mine—as My own holiness ('as I am holy')—(though Scripture qualifies this). And furthermore: "your G‑d"—your strength and vitality will flow from My holiness—for I am holy.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that striving for holiness applies equally to every Jew—not only those already spiritually refined—and that communal unity empowers individuals to reach higher levels. By sanctifying ourselves even in permissible matters, we draw Divine strength into our lives.
