איך האב ערהאלטען אייער פדיון נפש דורך הרה"ח הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ מוה"ר יעקב יהודא שי' העכט, אין וועלכן ער שרייבט מיר אויך דאס וואס איר האט עם דערציילט פון אייער פארגאנגענהייט... און אויך שרייבען א ספר תורה אין אייער נאמען, און שיקען די ספר תורה אין ארץ ישראל, און פרעגט מיין מיינונג אין דעם.
זיכער איז איבעריג צו אונטערשטרייכן די הייליקייט און גרויסקייט פון א ספר תורה, אבער עס איז פראן דאס וואס איז נאך מער הייליקער ווי א ספר תורה, און דאס זיינען די אידען וועלכע לערנען די תורה, און גראדע אין ארץ ישראל בא דם יעצטיגען מאמענט, וואס עס זיינען אנגעקומען טויזענטער אידישע קינדער וועלכע נויטיגען זיך אין א תורה ומצות ערציהונג, אז זיי זאלען וויסען וואס אידישקייט איז, שמירת שבת כשר א.א.וו. ליידער זיינען די צאל עקזיסטירענדע ישיבות און חדרים צו קליין אויף צו ארייננעמען די אלע אנגעקומענע אידישע קינדער. און טאג טעגליך קומען אן פון דארטן הארץ רייסענדע בריף וועגען דעם. וואס מיט א קליינע סומע בערך וואלט מען געקענט ראטעווען טויזענטער אידישע קינדער וועלכע זאלען ניט אפגעריסען ווערן ח"ו פון אידישן פאלק, און זאלן אויף שטענדיג בלייבן תורה טרייע אידען.
און דאס זעלבע איז אויך אין צפון אפריקא, וואס מיין שווער כ"ק אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ, זי"ע האט א קורצע צייט פאר זיין הסתלקות באפעהלט צו איינארדנען דארטן חדרים און שיבות צו לערנען די דארטיקע אידישע קינדער תורה ויראת שמים, און עס איז נויטיג געלט מיטלען אויף דעם.
איז מיין עצה דעריבער, וויבאלד קיין ספרי תורה פעלט ניט יעצט אין ארץ ישראל (זיי זיינען געבראכט געווארן פון יוראפישע לענדער), דאגעגען געלט אויף אויצוהאלטען מלמדים, און צו קויפען סידורים חומשים או ענליכעס ספרים, איז זייער נויטיג סיי אין ארץ ישראל און סיי אין צפון אפריקה, און דערפאר איז מיין מיינונג, אז וויבאלד איר האט דעם גוטען ווילען צו שרייבען א ספר תורה, אבער האט נאך ניט באשלאסן און פרעגט מיין מיינונג, זאלט איר זיך נאכפרעגען וויפיל וואלט קאסטען אט אזא ספר תורה צו שרייבען. און דעם סכום מיט א צוגאב פון איין דאללאר אוועקגעבען פאר גרינדען נאך א חדר אדער א תלמוד תורה אין ארץ ישראל און אין צפון אפריקה און אויך שיקען צו זיי סידורים, און אויף די סידורים ועט אנגעפרינטעט ווערען אז די וואס וועלען יוזען די סידורים זאלען מתפלל זיין און דערמאנען צום גוטען די מנדבים - אייך און אייער מאן שיחיו.
די גרויסקייט פון דעם זכות וואס איר וועט האבען דורך דעם איז שווער איבערצוגעבען אין ווערטער און בפרט אין א בריף, אבער איך האף אז איר וועט באגרייפען פון מיין שרייבען די וויכטיגקייט פון דעם, און השי"ת זאל אייך העלפען איר זאלט פארריכטען אינגאנצען אייער פארגאנגענהייט און פון היינט אן און ווייטער זאל זיין בא אייך א גוטער אידישער לעבען על פי התורה והמצוה.

I received your pidyon nefesh through Haraha"ch havavac"h iy"a nu"n oseik b'tzt"z Moreinu HaRav Yaakov Yehuda Hecht, in which he also writes to me what you told him about your past... and also about writing a Sefer Torah in your name and sending the Sefer Torah to Eretz Yisrael, asking my opinion on this.
Certainly, it goes without saying the holiness and greatness of a Sefer Torah. However, there is something even holier than a Sefer Torah: the Jews who study the Torah. Especially now in Eretz Yisrael at this moment, when thousands of Jewish children have arrived who are in need of an education in Torah and mitzvos so they will know what Judaism is—observance of Shabbos, kashrus, etc. Unfortunately, the number of existing yeshivos and cheders is too small to accommodate all these new Jewish children. Every day, heart-wrenching letters arrive from there about this issue. With a relatively small sum, it would be possible to save thousands of Jewish children from being torn away G‑d forbid from the Jewish people and ensure they remain loyal Jews devoted to Torah.
The same applies in North Africa, where my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal (may his merit protect us), shortly before his passing instructed that cheders and yeshivos be established there to teach the local Jewish children Torah and fear of Heaven. Financial resources are needed for this.
Therefore my advice is: since there is currently no shortage of Sifrei Torah in Eretz Yisrael (they have been brought from European countries), but money for supporting teachers and purchasing siddurim, chumashim or similar books is very much needed both in Eretz Yisrael and North Africa—my opinion is that since you have the good will to write a Sefer Torah but have not yet decided and are asking my opinion—you should inquire how much it would cost to write such a Sefer Torah. Then give that amount plus one dollar towards founding another cheder or Talmud Torah in Eretz Yisrael and North Africa, as well as sending them siddurim. On these siddurim it should be printed that those who use them should pray and mention for good the donors—you and your husband.
The greatness of the merit you will have through this is hard to express in words—especially in a letter—but I hope you will understand from my writing how important this is. May Hashem help you rectify your entire past completely; from now on may you have a good Jewish life according to Torah and mitzvah.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that supporting Jewish children's Torah education—especially where resources are scarce—is an even greater merit than writing a Sefer Torah itself. Directing funds toward schools and prayer books ensures future generations remain connected to Judaism.
