B"H, 4 Adar II, 5719. Brooklyn.
Mr. Yaakov, may he live.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from before Rosh Chodesh Adar II in which you express your astonishment at what is brought in Sefer Baal Shem Tov on Parshas Beha'aloscha in the name of the Baal Shem Tov—a commentary on the matter of Krias Yam Suf (the splitting of the sea)—that it was as if it happened naturally, and that the miracle was that at creation Hashem embedded in nature that on a certain day the sea would split, which seems contrary to what is explained elsewhere that Krias Yam Suf was a miracle and a very great one.
The aforementioned book is compiled from several sources, and it requires investigation as to how precise are the statements brought from those books from which it was collected. For in matters such as these, even an imprecision in a single word can change the meaning entirely. Especially since it is known that the Baal Shem Tov would say words of Torah in another language and not in Lashon HaKodesh (the holy tongue), and the translator did not always capture the Baal Shem Tov’s intent—even when the compiler was present at that time and place. See an example in Igeres HaKodesh of Rabbeinu HaZaken section 25 (Kama, Aleph).
It is very likely that this is also true in our case, for you are correct in your comment that Krias Yam Suf is considered a very great miracle. See also Shaar HaYichud VeHaEmunah by Rabbeinu HaZaken chapter 2.
Regarding the matter itself—even if we were to say that someone expressed regarding Krias Yam Suf in a manner similar to what is quoted in the name of the Baal Shem Tov above—it is well known that often people answer according to your approach and reasoning; even if we were to say (even though this is not actually so) that there was something natural about it—still etc., as explained there.
Let it be known that many of Israel’s greatest sages and researchers in previous generations explained similarly regarding the rainbow—about which it is said to be a sign of covenant—even though it is explained as being part of nature. See Torah commentators on Parshas Noach. Also, one can explain this style according to what Bachya writes (Beshalach 14:27): "It was placed into the nature of water," etc.—see there.
On this occasion I wish to arouse you regarding the necessity to set fixed times for learning Pnimiyus HaTorah which has been revealed in our generation through Toras HaChassidus; if at all times and places this was necessary, how much more so now, in our era and especially in Eretz HaKodesh may it be rebuilt and established speedily.
Summary
The Rebbe stresses careful accuracy when quoting teachings attributed to tzaddikim like the Baal Shem Tov, noting how imprecise wording can alter meaning drastically. He encourages establishing regular study sessions for Chassidus, especially today and particularly in Eretz Yisrael.
