Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter in which you write that it is difficult for you to overcome a certain matter and you do not know how to deal with it. It is already known that the beginning of rectification is first and foremost to strive to divert your mind entirely from the matter. Diverting your mind also means not fighting these thoughts nor engaging in debate with the yetzer hara who incites and entices you to think about this matter. You must invest your thoughts in an opposite matter, meaning something of Torah, about which it is said: Torah Or (Torah is light).

It is also proper that you have memorized some chapters of Mishnayos and at least one chapter of Tanya. Every weekday before morning prayers, set aside some coins for tzedakah, and after prayer—even on Shabbos and Yom Tov—recite the daily Tehillim portion as divided for the days of the month. It is understood that one must be careful regarding Ezra's immersion (tevilas Ezra), and above all, have complete regret for the past and guard your eyes from seeing or reading things that arouse or stimulate such matters. Be strong in your trust that Hashem has promised that no one will be cast away from Him.

If, G‑d forbid, one stumbles even so, sadness over this is completely rejected—as explained at length in Sefer HaTanya. Surely you have a regular study session in this book; if not established until now, establish it now. In the index at the end of Tanya you will find those chapters where it discusses how it is forbidden to be sad even if one has stumbled; contemplate there etc., see there.

May it be G‑d's will that you will be able to report good news regarding all of the above.

Blessings,

In the name of the Rebbe shlita,
Mazkir (secretary)
