Taking Sides in Synagogue Disputes and the Importance of Peace

The Rebbe addresses synagogue leadership about internal disputes, emphasizing that both sides usually share some blame and that peace is essential, especially in a holy place. He urges unity and reminds them that true blessing comes only through peace, particularly as they prepare for Shavuos.

B"H, 3 Sivan, 5715. Brooklyn.

I have received your letter from the 24th of Iyar, written by the secretary on behalf—as he writes—of the administration, and in response:

In general, when there are differences of opinion between two sides and it takes the form of a dispute—publicly and with sharp expressions—it is almost always the case that both sides are at fault, even if to different degrees and sometimes one side much more so; but some blame exists on each side.

Of course, differences of opinion are a normal phenomenon because not all minds think alike. But this should not lead to disputes or take on a sharp form.

How much more so when this is connected to a shul, which is a house of prayer for the L‑rd, where Jews come to pray and request from Hashem what they need both materially and spiritually. And Hakadosh Baruch Hu—Who is the essence of good—wants to fulfill these requests and prayers. But there is a condition: all those praying and all those expressing opinions in the shul must remember the ruling of the Mishnah: 'Lo matza Hakadosh Baruch Hu keli machzik berachah l'Yisrael ela haShalom' (The Holy One Blessed Be He found no vessel that holds blessing for Israel except peace). This Mishnah makes it even clearer how much peace must prevail in a synagogue—in addition to the general need for peace.

It is difficult to listen to claims from one side alone, and being distant makes it even harder to draw conclusions in such matters. But I am certain that with good will, there is no need for decisions from another source; it is enough for everyone to come together among themselves and remember—as stated by Rabbeinu HaZaken at the beginning of chapter 41 in Tanya—that Hakadosh Baruch Hu leaves aside higher and lower worlds and stands over him, observing him and examining his heart and mind. This means literally every individual present—even when they are discussing the matter you wrote about in your letter.

Everyone must reflect on the truth of the situation and take into account as fully as possible that this is a holy place which must draw down holiness while people are there—and to some extent also bring home some of that holiness. Surely ways will be found so that there will be peace among everyone for long days and good years; and that all together, with peaceful hearts, will spread the influence of their beis midrash—as befits a shul bearing such a name, Nusach HaAri Z"L—throughout their entire environment.

Especially now during these days—the days of preparation for Matan Torah—it is fitting for this situation. As the verse tells us: 'Vayichan sham Yisrael neged haHar' (And Israel encamped there opposite the mountain)—'Vayichan' in singular form—all as one person with one heart.

Hoping to soon receive good news regarding this matter. With blessings for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that disputes within a synagogue harm its sanctity and blessings; true unity and peace are vital for communal success—especially before Shavuos—since G‑d's blessings rest only where there is harmony among all members.
