Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 18th of Nissan—which was received after a considerable delay—as you requested, I will mention you and all those you wrote about at the resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal-leha nabgam zya. It seems that some time ago you wrote to me about all these matters; therefore it is surprising that in this letter you do not mention your study of the revealed part of Torah and your study of the inner dimension of Torah, which is called in the language of the holy Zohar 'Nishmata d'Oraysa'—the soul of Torah—which is Chassidus. For Torah is our life and the length of our days, and nothing departs from its simple meaning: it is our life even in this physical world. It is itself the conduit and vessel for receiving Hashem's blessings in all that a person and his family need.

Even though involvement in spreading Torah—which you write about in your letter—is incomparably great, it is also said: 'Is it not to share your bread with the hungry... when you see the naked, cover him' (Yeshayahu 58:7). The Tanna D'vei Eliyahu explains that when one sees someone hungry for Torah or lacking mitzvos, one must satisfy his hunger and cover his deficiencies. The verse concludes: 'And from your own flesh do not hide yourself,' meaning one must continually add for oneself both in Torah study and meticulous mitzvah observance, for these are matters pertaining to one's own body. Hashem grants each person the ability to do both things together.

Regarding the specific matters you wrote about: he—and likewise his wife—should set aside charity every weekday before prayer; his wife should also give some coins before lighting candles every Friday afternoon and before Yom Tov for hachnasas kallah (helping brides) and educational institutions founded on holiness. The measure of Hashem is measure for measure—except many times over—especially regarding shidduchim (matches) and increased fear of Heaven among sons and daughters. May Hashem grant success to bring good news in all these matters with proper health.

With blessing for good news.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that regular Torah study—both revealed and inner dimensions—and consistent acts of charity are essential channels for blessings. Personal spiritual growth must accompany efforts to help others; both are necessary for true success in life.
