... The intent of my words is that in his appearance—especially in his fear of Heaven—he should have a grown beard. Even if one would claim with complete sincerity (which I doubt) that the law follows those who permit shaving and not the view of Admor HaTzt"z, still, as a rabbi and spiritual leader who must serve as an example of what it means to be G‑d-fearing, others will learn from him regarding this matter as well. Through this he may cause others to stumble and transgress, G‑d forbid, five Torah prohibitions, as explained in the talk of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzukal lehe zichrono yagen aleinu (may his memory protect us), printed in the booklet "Bikor Chicago." And since he is already married for many long and good years, the issue of matchmaking does not prevent this. The only explanation I have for why he does not act accordingly is simply because of the tendency to yield to the world—just as the prophet complained already during the First Temple era that many among Israel declared: "We will be like all the nations." All the more so is this tendency strong in these times preceding Mashiach. The reason I emphasized this regarding a Lubavitch student is simply because only Lubavitch students born in America are particular about this and similar matters...
