... ובקרבנו לחודש אלול חדש החשבון דכל השנה, ומחשבה טובה הרי הקב"ה מצרפה למעשה, הרי מחשבה טובה בהכנה דאלול, הן בהסוג דאדם למקום - אני לדודי ודודי לי, הן בסוג דאדם לחברו - איש לרעהו ומתנות לאביונים, תהי' התחלה טובה להמעשה אף שתבוא אח"כ ואשר הקב"ה יצרפם יחד ועי"ז יתעלו ממקום טהור לקדוש יותר, וכמבואר בתניא דבאתערותא דלתתא אתערותא דלעילא למקום נעלה ועליון יותר, ובמילא באות ההשפעות מבלי מניעות ועכובים ע"ד המבואר בלקו"ת סוף פ' קרח.

Shalom u'Vrachah!
...And as we approach the month of Elul, the month of accounting for the entire year, and since a good thought is joined by the Holy One, blessed be He, to an action, therefore a good thought in preparation for Elul—whether in matters between man and G‑d (Ani LeDodi VeDodi Li—"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine") or between man and his fellow (Ish L'Re'eihu U'Matanot LaEvyonim—"each person to his friend and gifts to the poor")—will serve as a good beginning for the action even if it comes later. And Hashem will join them together so that through this they will be elevated from a pure place to an even holier one. As explained in Tanya, that through an awakening from below comes an awakening from above to an even higher and loftier place; consequently, blessings come without hindrance or delay as explained at the end of Parshat Korach in Likkutei Torah.

The Rebbe teaches that preparing with positive thoughts before Elul allows Hashem to combine these intentions with later actions, raising them to greater holiness and drawing down uninterrupted blessings.
