Shalom u'Vrachah!
I received your letter from the 22nd of Iyar, in which you write about your son... sheyichyeh, that you would like to see a purpose for him both materially and regarding marriage—both of which are interconnected—and therefore you ask my opinion whether he should immediately begin learning a trade.
Your son sheyichyeh is studying among many boys his age or even a few years older. Therefore, my opinion is that he should conduct himself in this matter as his other friends do. In general, the custom is that at his age it is still too early to devote oneself to such goals. Regarding the example you mention in your letter: aside from the fact that the other person is much older than him, there are other specific reasons for him. But concerning your son, it would be a shame to tear him away now from learning in which he is successful and has enthusiasm.
Especially now, the diamond-polishing field is very weak, and learning this trade takes two or three months when one knows where to learn it; therefore there is still plenty of time. It is certain that when the time comes, Hashem will grant him success with good arrangements both regarding livelihood and a good match. Meanwhile, he should better use his time to acquire more knowledge in learning—which will benefit him throughout his life both materially and spiritually.
In accordance with what was mentioned above, he should not be disturbed now with thoughts about future goals and matches—which are only relevant several years from now—and he should now continue his studies successfully.
According to your request, you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal for improvement in your health and also for livelihood. The merit of having raised a son who diligently studies Hashem's Torah and conducts himself according to its instructions should stand by you in all that you need.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches not to rush children into concerns about their future or marriage but instead encourages continued Torah study at their appropriate age. Trust in Hashem's timing for all needs while focusing on spiritual growth now.
