2485 —כאשר החתן המיועד נושא את אותו השם כמו חותנו

When the Proposed Groom Shares the Same Name as His Father-in-Law

ב"ה, כ"ה אד"ר, תשי"ד ברוקלין.
The Rebbe addresses a question regarding a shidduch where the prospective groom shares a name with his future father-in-law. He explains that if each is called by a different name or both use their full names, there is no issue. The Rebbe also offers blessings for success and nachas.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 14th of Adar, in which you ask my opinion regarding a shidduch being discussed for your daughter with a young man named Moshe Yosef, while your own name is David Moshe. If you are each called by different names—meaning one of you is called Moshe and the other Yosef—or it can be arranged that he is always called by both names, Moshe Yosef, or you by both names [David Moshe], then the question regarding the names is resolved.

As per your request, when I am at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, I will mention you for success in your business and for livelihood in general. May Hashem help you and your wife to have much Jewish nachas from your children.

With blessing.

Summary

The Rebbe explains that sharing a name between a prospective groom and his father-in-law poses no problem if each is called by a distinct name or their full names are used. He concludes with blessings for success and abundant nachas from their children.
