Overcoming Obsessive Thoughts and Ritual Concerns

Shalom u'Vrachah! Surely the doctor has told you – that many people find themselves in a situation similar to what you describe (where it seems to them that they did something not in the best manner, that their hands are not clean and therefore need to be washed again, etc.). If one tries not to pay attention at all to these thoughts (not to fight them – rather, to divert one's attention from them as much as possible), they gradually weaken until they disappear completely. And if she feels the urge to wash her hands, for example: she should not make an issue out of it; either she should tell herself there is no substance to this urge, or she should wash her hands and immediately occupy herself with something entirely unrelated.

One of the reasons for this situation is general weakness in health – so strengthening her health will also help ease the situation. Also, for a quicker improvement – consult a friendly doctor and follow his instructions. Check the mezuzot and names, and I will mention it at the Tziyun.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that obsessive ritual concerns can be overcome by ignoring them rather than battling them directly. Improving physical health, seeking medical advice, and ensuring proper spiritual safeguards like mezuzot are also important steps.
