Shalom u'Vrachah!
Regarding the sixteenth annual convention of Nshei U'Bnos Chabad, may Hashem grant them life, blessing and peace! This year’s convention takes place before Shabbat Mevarchim Sivan, the month of Matan Torah. Since everything is by Divine Providence, it is worthwhile to focus on one of the points of Matan Torah that has direct relevance to this convention.
Torah from Sinai begins with the Ten Commandments. The first two commandments: Anochi (which includes all positive mitzvos) and Lo Yihiyeh Lecha (which includes all prohibitions) are the foundation of the unity of Hashem. The introduction to Matan Torah was the unity of the Jewish people—Vayichan Sham Yisrael ("And Israel encamped there")—as one person with one heart. The purpose of Matan Torah is to bring down Hashem's unity into the world by Jews—Goy Echad BaAretz ("a singular nation in the land")—fulfilling the 613 mitzvos from one Torah.
Seemingly, it is not understood: how can such unity be achieved when Hashem created people with differing opinions (Ein Deioseihen Shavos), in a world that is also varied in climate and natural characteristics? How can an entire nation achieve complete unity among themselves and bring unity into such a world?
The explanation is as it says in the verse: Vayisyatzvu BeTachtis HaHar ("They stood at the foot of the mountain")—all 600,000 Jews stood under the mountain; meaning they completely submitted themselves to Torah from Sinai so that all other matters in the world seemed not to exist at all because they became entirely nullified in this acceptance of yoke, together with great joy from receiving the Torah. And since the mountain was equal for everyone and all were permeated with this same feeling of bittul and joy, this brought about true unity among all 600,000 Jews and thus also unity of Hashem Echad (the One G‑d) in the world through one Torah.
The same applies within a Jewish family. Although each member is an individual with their own unique life mission etc., when all members accept upon themselves one Torah from One G‑d so that Torah and mitzvos are central—and everything else is secondary and only has value when connected to this central point—then there is true unity in the family.
In this very unity within the family—which Jewish families are after all components of Klal Yisrael and thus form its foundation—the Jewish woman and daughter have a very important role as Akeres HaBayis (mainstay of the home), as has been emphasized on previous occasions.
Of course, this mentioned unity must be constant without interruption; meaning it should be expressed not only on certain days or hours but throughout every day and hour. That is, a Jewish home must be entirely based on Torah and mitzvos and so permeated with a spirit of accepting yoke and joy in mitzvah that it becomes evident even outside at home—in public and throughout its environment.
This contains the essence of what makes Jewish family life truly unique—the main theme of this year's convention.
It is hoped that this point will be brought out at the convention with proper clarity and strength, with its intent being its realization in daily life—in accordance with our Sages’ fundamental principle: "Action is what counts."
With blessings for success spiritually and materially, and for good tidings in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true unity—within families and among Jews—is achieved through collective dedication to Torah and mitzvos. Women play a crucial role as pillars of their homes, ensuring these values permeate every aspect of daily life both inside and outside their households.
