Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from Motzaei Shabbat Kodesh regarding my comment about the phrase "Leviim in their watches" versus "Leviim on their platform," you noted that it says "to the Leviim in their watches" (Bamidbar 8:26) and "the Leviim on their watches" (Divrei HaYamim I 9:14). It is surprising you did not point out even more: that many times the term "mishmeret" (watch) is used in connection with Gershon, Kehat, and Merari as Leviim (see end of Parshat Bamidbar and beginning of Parshat Naso), as well as elsewhere (as cited in the concordance).
The distinction is simple: "on their platform" emphasizes the uniqueness of the Leviim compared to Kohanim and Yisrael, whereas "in their watches," which is shared by Kohanim and Leviim (and even Yisrael)—see Taanit 26a and there. When it comes to Leviim together (in contrast) with Kohanim, further explanation is needed, as explained at length there: "their watches—to praise and serve opposite the Kohanim...and the gatekeepers..."
Therefore, the wording "Kohanim at their service, Leviim in their watches, and Yisrael at their station" requires correction (or additional explanation), and even if one adds explanation (as above from Divrei HaYamim), there remains room for concern—as noted by our Sages' famous comment (Kiddushin 70a): "Are Leviim on their platform so disliked by the Rabbis?" (Megillah 3a and elsewhere).
I already prefaced an answer to this question in my note at the end of my previous comment: referencing Taanit (26a and there)—where it is explicit that there were twenty-four watches for Kohanim, likewise for Leviim and Yisrael. See also Bamidbar Rabbah (21:3). Before this I referenced Megillah there.
With honor and blessing.
Summary
The Rebbe clarifies nuanced distinctions between terms describing the roles of Leviim—whether serving in their watches or on their platform—and emphasizes careful use of language when referencing these roles in prayer or study.
