B"H, First day of Bamidbar, 5726.

Brooklyn, NY.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

This year's annual dinner for the Chinuch institution "Oholei Torah" is taking place tomorrow, right after Shabbos Parshas Bamidbar, just a few days before Shavuos, the time of the giving of our Torah. This timing gives special significance and meaning to this yearly event for the benefit of Oholei Torah.

According to the sages, we always read Parshas Bamidbar before Shavuos. The parsha begins with the counting of the Jews in the Sinai desert; therefore, the entire Chumash Bamidbar is called Chumash HaPekudim (the Book of Numbers). One meaning is that before receiving the Torah, all Jews must be counted and included in Klal Yisrael because every Jew has a share in the Torah and every Jewish soul is connected to the holy Torah.

Every Jew—from Moshe Rabbeinu to the simplest person—must be counted as "one," no more and no less. For in their inner soul, all Jews are equal and precious to G‑d as children to their Father in Heaven, as explained in Tanya (chapter 32): "Kulam Metuyamot v'Av Echad L'Kulana" (All are equal and have one Father). From this it is also understood that one must never, G‑d forbid, "exclude" any Jew regardless of his or her status in Torah and mitzvos.

The recognition of the greatness of every Jewish soul—and that each soul is part of Klal Yisrael with G‑d as "one Father for all"—is itself a preparation for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.

Since the Torah was only given after we offered our children as guarantors—that they would learn and keep it—"Banenu Areivim Ba'adenu" (Our children are our guarantors), it is clear how vital true Torah-committed education is. The approach to this education should be: from educators—instilling in students a love for Torah and awe of Heaven together with love for Hashem and love for fellow Jews in the spirit of "Kulam Metuyamot v'Av Echad L'Kulana"; from supporters—recognizing their responsibility and privilege to provide every opportunity for such pure education and ensuring that not a single child is left out.

It is surely hoped that all participants in this annual undertaking for Oholei Torah will properly appreciate their responsibility and privilege toward this institution—to ensure that this effort fulfills all expectations in every respect and to its fullest extent—and that its success will be felt throughout the year.

Summary

Every Jew counts equally when it comes to receiving the Torah. Supporting authentic Torah education ensures each child’s connection to our heritage, fulfilling both personal responsibility and communal merit.
