Shalom u'Vrachah!
As we part ways—until after a year with G‑d's help—from the radiant festival of Chanukah, I send this message and reminder to Nshei U'Bnos Chabad and, through them, to all Jewish women and girls everywhere. Although Chanukah is celebrated only eight days a year, its essence and the lessons from the Chanukah lights are relevant all year round.
The lesson from lighting the Chanukah candles contains three fundamental points that directly relate to our times and offer practical guidance: (a) The Chanukah lights (which symbolize Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or) must be kindled after sunset when it is dark. This teaches us not to be affected by "darkness" or spiritual poverty—for even a small amount of Torah and mitzvos light dispels much darkness; how much more so does abundant light. (b) The Chanukah lights must be lit at the entrance of one's home facing outward so their brightness shines outside. This teaches us not to be satisfied with having light and warmth from Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or only at home; we must also strive to illuminate the street and our entire environment. (c) The Chanukah lights are kindled in an increasing manner—adding one more candle each night. This teaches us that efforts to strengthen and spread Torah-true Judaism should always increase, and this very work inherently assures ever-growing success.
Our Sages of blessed memory emphasize that women—just like men—are obligated in the mitzvah of Ner Chanukah because af hein hayu b'oso ha'nes (they too were part of the miracle). Special mention is made of the self-sacrifice shown by Jewish women and girls at that time to protect the sanctity of the Jewish home and preserve the honor of Jewish daughters pure and unblemished.
Today more than ever before, Jewish women and girls must remember their special responsibility—and eternal merit—that Divine Providence has placed upon them: to continue and uphold the Jewish way of life on the foundations and traditions of Torah and mitzvos in daily living.
As akeres habayis (the mainstay of the home), the Jewish woman is the foundation of her household. Upon her depends, to a great extent, the very basics of Jewish continuity: taharas hamishpachah (family purity), kashrus, sanctity of Shabbos and festivals, education of sons and daughters—the entire atmosphere at home for all family members—which connects directly to the general continuity of Jewish life overall and even to the very existence of our people.
May the little flames of Chanukah—with their content as Ner Mitzvah v'Torah Or—always shine within you personally and your families as living examples for others as well. May the light of Torah and mitzvos, imbued with chassidic warmth and vitality, penetrate every corner of your home and radiate outward into your surroundings.
Strengthen and expand your devoted activities according to Nshei U'Bnos Chabad's rich program to their fullest extent. And may G‑d help that all these efforts be carried out increasingly—mosif v'holech—and bring into your homes among all Israel ever-increasing blessings from Above in everything needed: true Yiddishe nachas from children, good health, abundant livelihood both materially and spiritually together.
Blessings for outstanding success and good tidings in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that every Jewish woman can bring lasting light into her home and community by internalizing Chanukah's lessons: dispelling darkness with mitzvos, radiating warmth outwardly, always increasing in holiness—and thus ensuring blessing for herself and all Israel.
