במענה למכתבו... תקותי חזקה שבורח הוא וחבריו שי' מכל ענין של מחלוקת ח"ו ולדבר לשון הרע על מי שהוא, ומשפיע גם על אחרים שלא יכנסו לכל ענין של מחלוקת, וכל אחד ואחד יעסוק בלימוד תורה וקיום המצות ככל המוטל עליו וישתדל להוסיף בזה.
ואם נצטוינו אזהרה חמורה, ואהבת לרעך כמוך, על אחת כמה וכמה שאיסור גמור מן התורה, לחפש חסרונות על בן ישראל חבירו, ואם בא מי שהוא ופותח עוד מקום ללמד בני ישראל תורה, פסק דין הוא בשולחן ערוך (יורה דעה סימן רמ"ה סעיף כ"ב) אשר אין יכולים למחות בידו ואדרבה על זה נאמר, ה' חפץ למען צדקו יגדיל תורה ויאדיר, ולפלא שכנראה אינו שם לבו לפסק דין זה של תורתנו הק' תורת חיים, ואדרבה מלשון הכתוב הרי מוכח שצריך לסייע ביד העושה זה.
והנה אמרו חז"ל אין צועקין על העבר, אבל רצוני לקוות שתיכף בקבלת מכתבי זה יראה בפס"ד שו"ע האמור וימלא פס"ד זה במילואו ובפרט שעי"ז יתרבה השלום, והשלום הוא כלי מחזיק ברכתו של הקב"ה, ואחכה לבשו"ט בכל האמור.

In response to your letter... My strong hope is that you and your colleagues distance yourselves from any matter of dispute, G‑d forbid, and from speaking lashon hara about anyone. You should also influence others not to enter into any matter of dispute. Each person should engage in Torah study and fulfillment of mitzvos as required of him and strive to increase in these areas.
If we have been given a serious warning—Ve'Ahavta L'Reiacha Kamocha ("Love your fellow as yourself")—how much more so is it a complete prohibition from the Torah to seek out faults in one's fellow Jew. If someone comes and opens another place to teach Torah to Jews, it is a clear ruling in Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh Deah 245:22) that one cannot protest against him; on the contrary, regarding this it is said: Hashem Chafetz Lema'an Tzidko Yagdil Torah Veya'adir ("The L‑rd desires for the sake of His righteousness to make the Torah great and glorious"). It is surprising that apparently he does not pay attention to this ruling of our holy Torah of life; on the contrary, from the wording of the verse it is clear that one must assist someone who does this.
Our Sages said: "We do not cry out over the past," but I wish to hope that immediately upon receiving my letter you will look up this ruling in Shulchan Aruch as mentioned and fulfill it completely—especially since through this peace will be increased. Peace is the vessel that holds the blessing of the Holy One Blessed be He. I await good news regarding all the above.
