Shalom u'Vrachah!
After a long break I received your letter from Erev Shabbat Kodesh. Regarding what you wrote about strengthening Chabad matters in Chicago, it is surprising that there is any doubt or question about this, especially since my approach is well known everywhere and at all times: not only must there be strengthening, but it must be done in a manner of ufaratzta (you shall spread forth). This is also clear from what we heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: "In our era, a Jew is like someone climbing a very steep mountain; standing still is impossible—either he climbs up or, G‑d forbid, the opposite." If this was true then, how much more so in our time and in this country, where there is an awakening felt in many circles and specifically as an arousal from below upward. And those who should have been at the forefront—unfortunately, to our great sorrow—are the ones who push back and hesitate. They are stuck in fears reminiscent of the period of the maskilim: "Perhaps we will overstep the measure by stating the truth without compromise regarding our Torah and mitzvos." If such demands are made by outsiders, how much more so from those educated by our Rebbeim and especially by my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal.
It is understood that I have often said these things to leaders of various rabbinic organizations. I felt at the time that they appreciated these words and could build a sermon on this foundation—possibly dividing it into several parts to use for more than one sermon—and would no longer need to worry or feel burdened about what to speak about next Shabbat. And with this... let it be enough.
May it be G‑d's will that immediately after this evening comes morning—the morning of the Unique One of the world as our Sages expound on "And it was... one day," as at creation—that even in this world it will be revealed as explained by our Sages (Pesachim 50a).
With blessings for success in your holy work regarding all of the above and for good news also in your personal matters.
Summary
The Rebbe urges unwavering commitment to spreading Chabad activities energetically and without hesitation. He teaches that spiritual progress requires constant ascent; standing still leads backward. Leaders must overcome doubts and inspire others through action rooted in faith.
